The first sneak peek has been released of Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw starring in a new psychological thriller, titled The Girl Before.

The four-part limited series hails from director Lisa Brühlman, who previously worked on Killing Eve, and is based on the JP Delaney novel of the same name.

The story follows Jane, played by Mbatha-Raw, who moves into a new home designed by an enigmatic architect, only to find out the occupants are expected to abide by his onerous rules.

After living in the house a while, she starts to feel herself changing and makes a shocking discovery about her predecessor, who has alarming similarities with her. But will she meet the same fate as the girl before?

Mbatha-Raw plays the series' lead, Jane. She told the BBC: "I'm so excited to work with this amazing team on such a compelling story in my debut role as actor/producer."

David Oyelowo, famed for his roles in HBO's Nightingale and A United Kingdom, plays the sinister architect.

"This story is mind-bending in its clever construction and intricacy," Oyelowo said. "I can't wait to see it, let alone be in it. Plus, I'd go anywhere to work with my friend Gugu again."

Jessica Plummer, known for portraying Chantelle Atkins in EastEnders, stars as Emma, the woman that lived in the home prior to Jane. Ben Hardy (EastEnders, X-Men: Apocalypse) also stars.

JP Delaney, who wrote the best-selling novel this series is based on, is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Marissa Lestrade (Deep State, Casualty).

The series will be released on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and HBO Max in the US, although a release date is yet to be confirmed. BBC and HBO are co-producing the series.
