World Cup 2018: England's quarter-final win sparks wild scenes on streets

England's World Cup quarter-final victory has sparked wild scenes across the country as fans took to the streets to celebrate the team's success.

Supporters blocked traffic and climbed on to vehicles, bus stops and street signs after the Three Lions' dramatic win over Sweden.

An ambulance vehicle in London was badly damaged after several people were pictured standing on top of it while a medic responded to a call nearby.

London Ambulance Service said there was "no excuse" for the vandalism which meant the car was unable to respond to patients after suffering a smashed windscreen and dented bonnet.

The Metropolitan Police said there had been no arrests over the incident.

Footage posted online showed fans invade a branch of Swedish furniture store Ikea in Stratford, east London, where they began jumping on beds.

Another video captured a supporter leap from a bus in Clapham Junction on to the roof of shelter which then collapsed.

In Nottingham, a man was pictured jumping on a smashed car, while a group of supporters were seen dancing on top of a bus shelter.

Nottinghamshire Police said a number of arrests were made in the city centre for public order offences.

Millions of football fans across the country watched as England secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.

An audience of 16.5 million saw Tuesday night's penalty shoot-out victory over Colombia, with an even greater number expected to have tuned in for the Sweden match.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association, sent his own message of congratulations shortly after the Three Lions' 2-0 win.

Writing on the Kensington Palace Twitter account, William said: "You wanted to make history @England and you are doing just that.

"This has been an incredible #WorldCup run and we've enjoyed every minute. You deserve this moment - Football's Coming Home! W".

Former England captain David Beckham also hailed Gareth Southgate's side as "confident, professional and a team that are playing for each other, playing for the manager and playing for our country".

England will now play Croatia on Wednesday for a place in the World Cup final.
