Police have carried out fresh raids and detained a number of people this morning in connection with the London Bridge terror attack.

Twelve people were arrested on Sunday after an armed raid in Barking, east London. A further raid also took place in East Ham. 

Scotland Yard said police were searching two more east London addresses - one in Newham and another in Barking - after entering the properties at 4.15am. A number of people were being questioned, it said.

Residents reported hearing "loud flash bangs and gunshots". Twitter user BatemanLDN said: "It woke me up along with the whole street. Extremely loud bangs followed by gunshot bangs.

"All ok - very shaken residents nearby though. All quietened down now."

Seven people were killed and 48 injured in the attack on Saturday, with 21 fighting for their lives in hospital.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility for the London attacks on Sunday night as the first victim was named as Chrissy Archibald from Canada.

It emerged earlier on Sunday that police fired an "unprecedented" 50 bullets to kill the three London Bridge terrorists because they believed the attackers were wearing suicide belts, the country's head of counter-terrorism said.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said a member of the public also received a gunshot wound in the hail of bullets from the eight officers.

Pro-Islamic State social media users claimed the London attacks were revenge for the RAF’s "love from Manchester" air strike, according to the Site intelligence monitoring group.

A photograph emerged last week of an RAF bomb with the message “love from Manchester” written on it. It was on its way to strike Isil targets in Syria. According to Site, one Twitter user posted the image and wrote: "This is your merchandise and tonight we responded."

Earlier, Theresa May warned that Britain is in the grip of a spate of copycat terror attacks in the wake of the London Bridge atrocity.

The Prime Minister delivered a stark assessment of the threat facing the UK after seven people were murdered and dozens more injured by three terrorists on Saturday night.

It was the third terrorist outrage to hit the country this year following the Westminster and Manchester attacks.

Speaking outside Downing Street, Mrs May said that although there was no direct link between the three incidents, "terrorism breeds terrorism".

New figures from NHS England show that of 48 people taken to hospital on Saturday night, 36 are currently being cared for in central London hospitals.

Of these, 21 remain in a critical condition.

Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick condemned the atrocity as "appalling" and "ghastly".

She said police believe there were three attackers at London Bridge and Borough Market and that all had been "neutralised".

Attackers brought carnage to the streets of the capital, stabbing a police officer and revellers with 12-inch knives, reportedly shouting "this is for Allah".

The trio were pictured wearing what appeared to be explosive vests, with police later confirming they were hoaxes.

Police were called at around 10.08pm to reports of a vehicle striking pedestrians on London Bridge.

The white van then continued to drive to Borough Market. Three men then left the vehicle and began to stab people, including a British Transport Police Officer;

The suspects were confronted and shot by police at Borough Market within eight minutes of the first call being made.

Meanwhile, the major political parties have suspended national election campaigning after the London Bridge terror attack.

After consultation between the parties, national activities were put on hold until Sunday evening at least, with the position set to be reviewed later in the day.

But Ukip broke with the other parties by refusing to suspend its General Election campaign, with leader Paul Nuttall warning that stalling the democratic process could lead to more attacks.

British Muslims need to ask 'searching questions'

British Muslims should "go further" than condemning terror attacks, a government minister has said.

Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said members of his faith should be challenging extremism adding: "We can no longer shy away from those difficult conversations".

Turnbull reveals fourth Australian caught up in attack

Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has revealed that four Australians were caught up in the attack, one more than previously thought, writes Jonathan Pearlman.

He said there were "very real concerns" about two of them. 

Two of the Australians have been identified: Candice Hedge, who was stabbed in the throat and is recovering in hospital, and Andrew Morrison, who was stabbed in the throat and is returning home. 

Mr Turnbull said officials have been in touch with the families of the victims but were yet to confirm the circumstances of two of them.

"As you know, there are around 130,000 Australians living in the UK at any given time, and many Australian visitors, and there were many Australians in the vicinity of the attack," he said.

"This corruption of Islam, this blasphemous corruption of millions of Muslims around the world, trying to poison the religion from the inside and threaten all of our way of life."

Commuters to face more disruption

London commuters are facing disruption to their journeys on Monday morning after terror struck the capital on Saturday evening.

The Metropolitan Police said cordons put in place while officers carry out investigation work would remain "well into Monday", while train services will also be disrupted.

London Bridge rail station will reopen on Monday at 5am but as exit only, while the Underground station will be open, Transport for London said.

The mainline station is a key gateway for travellers heading to Kent and Surrey, with National Rail saying services on Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink are likely to be disrupted.

British Transport Police said people may notice an increased police presence following the attacks which killed seven.

In a statement, the force said: "Members of the public should expect to see extra police officers patrolling stations in London and the south east following the attacks.

"You may also see some of our armed police officers at stations."

Australian foreign minister gives latest on injured

Australia's foreign minister says three Australians have been injured in the knife attacks.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Candice Hedge is recovering in St. Thomas' Hospital and Andrew Morrison had received stitches for a wound and was on his way home to Australia. Both had been stabbed in the neck. The government is still making inquiries into the third Australian's condition.

Hedge, a 34-year-old waitress, has been living in Britain for about a year and was working in the Borough Markets area where witnesses say she was stabbed as she tried to hide under a table.

She posted on social media: "Hey everyone, just so you know im doing ok. Bit of pain but I will survive."

Morrison, an electrician from Darwin, posted on social media that he had been stabbed leaving Belushi's London Bridge bar after watching the Champions League final.

Morrison said in a video: "All of a sudden this guy comes up with a knife. I just, like, push him off. I walk into a pub and I'm like: 'Someone help me, I've just been stabbed.' "

French foreign affairs minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says a French citizen died in the attacks and seven were taken to hospital, four of whom were in a critical state. Another French national is missing, he added.

Newspaper Ouest-France reported the victim was from St Malo, Brittany, and worked in a bar in the London Bridge area.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis: US and allies 'don't scare' in face of Isil attacks

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis says the United States and its allies are not intimidated by Islamic State violence.

In remarks at the opening of US-Australian talks in Sydney, Mattis said the allies are united in their resolve to defend against Isil.

He did not mention the latest deadly attack in London, but he said Isil is wrong to think that by perpetrating violence, it can "scare us."

Mattis said: "We don't scare."

Police uncover YouTube link to London terror attack 

Counter-terrorism officers secretly recorded an alleged Isil-inspired terror cell in Barking last month discussing how to use YouTube to plot a van and knife attack in London, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

The investigators were monitoring the alleged extremist cell in the east London borough weeks before Saturday night’s attack in the capital, which left seven dead and 48 injured. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Sunday police arrested 12 people, among them seven women – all of them in Barking and other parts of east London, where at least one of Saturday’s killers was believed to have lived. Those arrested were aged from 19 to 60.

The Daily Telegraph has discovered that one alleged suspect said the intended method was to “use a car as a weapon” and boasted that he had radicalised more than a dozen “students” in Barking “wanting to martyr themselves”.

He said the plot would involve driving at pedestrians and then getting out of the vehicle to attack others. He added: “YouTube videos all make it properly easy to do.”

One of the plotters talked about “getting an automatic [vehicle] so the boys can drive it”.

Isil claim responsibility for London attacks

The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the London attacks in a statement.

In a statement released 24 hours after the killings on its official Amaq media channel, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) said the three suspects had been part of a "sleeper cell".

It said: "A security unit of Islamic State fighters carried out the London attacks yesterday."

First victim identified as Chrissy Archibald from Canada

The first victim of the London Bridge terror attack has been identified as "beautiful and loving" bride-to-be Chrissy Archibald.

Chrissy, from British Colombia, Canada, was among seven people killed, a family spokesperson confirmed.

Her grieving relatives today paid tribute to a woman who "believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected".

She used to work in a shelter for the homeless before deciding to move to Europe to be with her fiancé.

They urged members of the public to volunteer their time and labour or donate to a homeless shelter, saying: "Tell them Chrissy sent you.”

Acting US ambassador to UK praises Sadiq Khan after Trump mockery

The acting US ambassador to the United Kingdom praised the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, for his response to this weekend’s terrorist attack, after President Trump criticized Khan on Twitter.

“The response from emergency services, law enforcement and officials in [London] - as well as ordinary Londoners - has been extraordinary,” said Lewis Lukens.

He then went on to single out Mr Khan for praise.

 His remarks strike a dramatically different tone to that of his president.

"I saw hatred in his eyes"

From Paris, my colleague Rory Mulholland has more detail on the French victim.

The young Frenchman who was killed in the London attack died after he was stabbed in the neck by one of the attackers who burst into the Boro Bistro he worked in and started slashing customers and staff, according to an account that has emerged in the French media.

"The bar was packed. A terrorist arrived and jumped from above onto a parasol on the terrace, injuring one of my colleagues," said Vincent Le Berre, the bistro's manager, according to the account his mother gave a French newspaper in his native Brittany.

"He immediately started attacking people. A woman customer was killed.

"I found myself face to face with the terrorist who was two metres from me. I saw the hatred in his eyes. I managed to escape but my friend Alexandre wasn't so lucky. He was stabbed in the neck with a knife," he said, according to Vincent's his mother, Marie-Jo Le Berre, who said she had spoken to her son on the phone.

She told Le Télégramme, a Brittany newspaper, that her son thought that Alexandre, 27, who also worked in the bar, had not survived after the stabbing. 

French officials have given no information about the French victims of the attack, but another French newspaper reported that the Frenchman who died in the London attack was a 27-year-old from Saint-Malo in Brittany who was working in the Boro Bistro.

The paper, Ouest France newspaper said the young man was stabbed by one of the attackers and later died of his injuries.

It said he had been living in Britain for the past two and a half years.

Eiffel Tower goes dark

The lights at the Eiffel Tower will be switched off Sunday night to honour victims of the attack in the heart of London that killed seven people and injured 48, the company running the monument said on Twitter.

"Tonight, at 1245 am, I will turn my lights off to pay tribute to the victims of the London attack," the Eiffel Tower's Twitter feed said.

The Paris landmark has been switched off twice already this week, once for the victims of suicide blasts in Baghdad that killed at least 42 people and most recently to honour the 90 people killed in a huge truck bomb in Kabul.

The Frenchman who died in the London attack was a 27-year-old from Saint-Malo in Brittany who was working in the Boro Bistro near the site of the assault, French media reported.

French officials have given no information on the French citizens caught up in the attack, but Ouest France newspaper said the young man was stabbed by one of the attackers and later died of his injuries.

It said he had been living in Britain for the past two and a half years.

French president speaks to French victims

President Macron has spoken on the phone with the families of the French people injured in the London attack and told them of his "affection" for them and said that the whole of France was united behind them, his office said.

He also ensured them that France would do whatever was necessary to help them in their hour of need.

Earlier,  Prime Minister Edouard Philippe visited a crisis centre set up at the French Foreign Ministry that fields calls from anxious citizens after attacks. By mid-afternoon, the centre had received several thousand calls from citizens worried about their loved ones in London or who needed information on whether it was safe to travel there.

French officials have so far given little information about the French victims and have identified none of them. The foreign minister said late afternoon that one French person had been killed, seven were being treated for their injuries in hospital, with four of them in a serious condition, and one was missing.

Media reports said that one of the French wounded was stabbed in the neck and the back,  and that doctors spent several hours operating on her after she was rushed to hospital. Another French citizen reportedly suffered serious injuries to her legs when  when she was hit by the van on London Bridge.

The United Arab Emirates on Sunday warned its citizens against travelling to Britain after the London Bridge attack, the third in the country linked to Islamist militants in three months.

State news agency WAM quoted senior foreign ministry offcial Ahmed Al Ham Al Dhaheri as saying the warning was based on the ministry's assessment of risks and threats following the attack.

A friend reported suspected attacker to anti-terror hotline  

A friend of one of the suspected attackers says he had reported him to the anti-terror hotline, but no action was taken.

The man, who asked not to be named, told the BBC's Asian Network that the pair had spoken about previous attacks and he was shocked at what he had heard.

But the friend claims the suspected attacker was not arrested and was allowed to keep his passport.

Londoners to come together at vigil tomorrow before minute's silence on Tuesday 

The UK will observe a minute's​ silence on Tuesday, June 6, and flags will remain at half-mast on Whitehall government buildings, Downing Street has announced.

The silence will be held at 11am in remembrance of those killed and hurt by the attacks in London on Saturday evening.

Londoners can also attend a vigil in Potters Fields Park beside City Hall tomorrow evening from 6pm.

Flags across the country have already been flying at half mast after seven people were killed in a van and knife rampage by three terrorists on London Bridge and nearby Borough Market in Southwark.

Seven arrested in East Ham raid, locals say

Harry Yorke is in East Ham and has been talking to locals.

He reports the owners of Sam's Chicken Shop next door to the flat raided by police earlier today said armed officers stormed the apartment at 2.15pm, and then arrested seven people.

Mathu Sivahran, who witnessed the raid, said that a Romanian man and his girlfriend lived in the flat.

She added that both had been arrested, and that five black men, one in "full Islamic dress", were also taken away from the property.

"It had happened two hours ago, around 2.15pm. We saw armed police running around the rooftop, they shouted "put your hands up", they surrounded them. 

"Then they brought out five black guys and the Romanian guys and his girlfriend.

"One of the black guys was wearing full Islamic headdress.

"The Romanian people came in quite a lot. He was a nice, quiet boy. Always very good boy when he ordered food."

Taxi driver saved my life, says student

A student nurse who escaped the London Bridge terror attack has said she wants to find the taxi driver who saved her life.

Rhiannon Owen was on Borough High Street at a cash machine when a passing taxi driver shouted for her to run.

She said the actions of the unknown man saved her life and allowed her to find shelter in a nearby pub and to alert others to the danger in the process.

Talking to the Press Association the 19-year-old from Nantwich, Cheshire said: "He swerved towards me and screamed 'please run, you've got to run now, get back, get back.

"I turned around and saw this man with this huge blade and I just ran as fast as I could to the nearest pub.

"I shouted into the pub and said to everyone 'you need to get inside'. We all went upstairs for, I don't even know how long, and gunshots started and they went on for ages."

She said the police eventually came and said those inside could leave, but that they had to do so with their hands on their heads.

Describing the scene outside of Applebee's, the establishment in which she took refuge, Ms Owen said: "It was horrible, horrible. People were screaming and crying.

"Emergency services everywhere, blue flashing lights, armed police on every metre of road - it was completely packed."

Quizzed on if she saw anyone with injuries, she said she saw a man "bleeding out".

"The window was smashed and he was on the floor and he was screaming - I think he had been a victim of the stabbing," she added.

Following her ordeal the student nurse said she wants to track down the taxi driver who alerted her to the danger.

In an emotional plea she said: "I don't know who you are, but you saved my life. I could run away because you told me to. Whoever you are I want to say thank you so much."

Ms Owen said there were 30 to 40 people hiding in the upstairs of the pub with her, that they were "terrified" and with the sound of gunshots "everyone jumped to the floor".

She said she is "totally in shock" after what has happened, adding: "I've not even had time to cry because I've not processed anything properly yet."

Barking raid: Neighbours reveal 'suspect' had two young children - a toddler and baby

People living in and around the block of flats raided earlier today have been talking about the man their believe is the suspect.

Salaudeen Jailabdeen, 40, who lives in a neighbouring block of flats, said he immediately thought of his neighbour when he first saw a photo appearing to show one of the attackers on the ground.

"He is definitely yes, he is the one", he said, when asked how certain he was that the man he had seen in the photos was his neighbour.

"I don't believe that he (has) done that... he's very friendly to everyone," he added.

He recalled an incident in a mosque a couple of months ago where the man disrupted an imam who was preaching.

He said the incident took place at the nearby Jabir mosque: "He interrupted the Imam, he asked a question, he disagreed with that.

"And then people said to him 'don't interrupt this time, come back later or after the preach ask the questions'.

"He didn't agree with that," he said, adding that the man was then escorted out the mosque.

He said he could not remember the subject matter which was being discussed.

"There was concern about that but after that I don't know what happened," he said.

He added that the man had two young children - a toddler and baby.

Meanwhile, just over a mile away on Barking Road in East Ham there was heavy armed police presence but Scotland Yard was unable to say whether it was linked to the earlier arrests.

Romanian chef, 20, hit attacker on the head with a crate

Yet another story of incredible bravery in the face of a terror attack is emerging.

A Romanian chef is being hailed as a hero on social media after he took in some 20 terrified people in the bakery where he worked as attackers targeted restaurants and bars in Borough Market.

Florin Morariu, who works at the Bread Ahead bakery in the market, told The Associated Press: "We were looking out of the window because we saw that everyone was agitated, everyone was running, people, women... they were fainting, falling and we went outside to see what was happening."

He said when he went outside and saw two people stabbing others, he at first "froze" and didn't know what to do.

But then he went and hit one of the attackers on the head with a crate.

"There was a car with a loudspeaker saying 'go, go' and they (police) threw a grenade.... and then I ran."

He added that when he saw that "people were desperate," he let about 20 people into the bakery and pulled the shutters down.

 Is Donald Trump considering visiting London this week, to show his support?

That is what ABC News's chief White House correspondent is reporting.

I have asked the White House if it's true, and they are yet to confirm or deny.

But a Fox News security analyst, Dan Bongino, urged the president this morning to visit.

He should walk across London Bridge in solidarity, said Mr Bongino - who also called on Londoners to ignore Sadiq Khan's advice not to panic.

In reality, a visit by Mr Trump is highly unlikely.

The security would be a nightmare for a police force whose resources are currently all being directed at the attack aftermath.

And Downing Street would surely realise that, given his immediate response on Twitter to the attack, his presence would spark huge protests.

Thornberry accuses May of politicising her response to terror attack

Theresa May has been accused of offering a political response to the London Bridge terror attack by promising measures to combat extremism, despite an agreement to suspend national election campaigning.

All the major political parties except Ukip put electioneering on hold in the wake of the atrocity.

However shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry questioned whether Mrs May had politicised the debate by announcing a four-point plan to tackle terrorism in a statement in Downing Street.

Ms Thornberry told BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend: "I don't think it's right to get dragged into plans at this stage, so soon after those attacks. I do think this is a matter of timing."

The Prime Minister spoke about clamping down on hate preaching and the spread of extremist ideology online, as well as ending tolerance of extremism and reviewing the powers of police and security agencies. Jail sentences for extremism-linked crime could be lengthened, she added.

Asked if the announcement had strayed into party politics, Mrs Thornberry said: "I think that it is drawing us into a debate. I think that there is time enough to discuss these issues.

"As I say, I don't think that anything she is proposing is anything that needs to be or that will be dealt with tomorrow.

"I don't think there is anything which is immediate that she is putting forward and obviously if it was then that would be a different matter.

"To come out onto the steps of 10 Downing Street, immediately in the aftermath of a terrible outrage like this, was not something that would be expected.

"I just simply regret the approach that she has taken."

'Incredibly brave' stabbed police officer fought off attackers armed with just a baton

More on the remarkable story of the British Transport Police officer who confronted the attackers armed with only a baton.

BTP said the officer has only been with the force for two  years and praised him for his bravery in the face of terror.

The man, who remains unnamed, is recovering from his injuries in hospital after he was stabbed during the London Bridge terror attack.

The officer was one of the first on the scene after he responded to calls for help from the public after a vehicle ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge.

BTP chief constable Paul Crowther, who visited the officer in hospital where he is in a stable condition after suffering face, head and leg injuries, said he showed "enormous courage in the face of danger".

He said: "Although he is seriously unwell, he was able to recount how he faced the attackers armed only with his baton, outside London Bridge station.

"For an officer who only joined us less than two years ago, the bravery he showed was outstanding and makes me extremely proud.

"All of us at BTP wish him a swift recovery, and I know he will be touched by the hundreds of messages of support from across the UK and the world.

"Our thoughts are with all of those who died or were injured, and their loved ones as they try to come to terms with what happened."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has hit back at Donald Trump, after the US president accused him of suggesting that people should not be "alarmed" by terror attacks on the capital

In a series of tweets the morning after the London Bridge atrocity, Mr Trump said it was time to "stop being politically correct", adding: "At least seven dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!"'

But a spokesman for Mr Khan branded the comment "ill-informed" and said the president had deliberately taken out of context remarks made by the mayor to reassure people about the increased police presence in the wake of the attack.

Speaking on the BBC, Mr Khan made clear that he was advising Londoners and visitors not to be concerned by the presence of additional armed police officers on the streets of the capital in the days to come, and not playing down anxieties about the attack itself.

"My message to Londoners and visitors to our great city is to be calm and vigilant today," Mr Khan said.

"You will see an increased police presence today, including armed officers and uniformed officers. There is no reason to be alarmed by this."

In response, Mr Trump tweeted: "We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don't get smart it will only get worse."

He then tweeted a few minutes later: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!"'

And he took an opportunity to defend his own resistance to gun control in the US, saying: "Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now? That's because they used knives and a truck!"

A spokesman for Mr Khan later said: "The mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services and the Government to co-ordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack and provide leadership and reassurance to Londoners and visitors to our city.

"He has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump's ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police - including armed officers - on the streets."

Attack happened hours after Isil outlet called for knife and vehicle assaults on civilians

An Islamic State group propaganda outlet exhorted would-be jihadists to carry out vehicle and knife attacks on civilians, just hours before three terrorists went on a rampage in central London, reports The Telegraph's defence correspondent Ben Farmer.

The message sent out on an encrypted messaging app urged attackers to “gain benefit from Ramadan” and “kill the civilians of the Crusaders. Run over them by vehicles".

The message followed another attempt last month by Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil) to encourage jihadists to carry out attacks during the Muslim holy month.

The latest message written in English and Arabic was posted on Saturday morning on the Telegram messaging service by an Isil-linked news service called Nashir News Agency. The message was then reposted after the London attack which killed seven people. However, there has yet to be a claim of responsibility for Saturday evening's London attack.

This year is the third consecutive one where Isil has tried to hijack the 30-day period of fasting and reflection in the Islamic world, to wage a campaign of attacks in the West, said Kyle Orton, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society studying the group.

A similar call to arms at the start of Ramadan in 2016 was credited with inspiring a string of bloody attacks.

Top Muslim lawyer brands authorities 'lazy' in their efforts to tackle extremism

One of the country's most prominent Muslim lawyers has branded the authorities "lazy" in their efforts to reach out to minority community leaders and tackle extremism.

Former chief crown prosecutor Nazir Afzal said a number of prominent figures in Muslim communities were in their roles "for all sorts of wrong reasons".

Mr Afzal told BBC Radio 5's Pienaar's Politics that the Government must do more to reach young Muslim women in order to connect with these groups.

It comes as Saturday's attack - which took place during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan - was condemned by Tory former cabinet minister Baroness Warsi and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

Prime Minister Theresa May has also pledged to stamp out tolerance of extremism and put an end to "separated, segregated communities" in the wake of the atrocity.

Mr Afzal, who prosecuted the Rochdale sex-grooming gang, told the BBC he had spent 25 years meeting "so-called community leaders who represent no one but themselves".

The majority of British Muslims were female, under 25 and from low income backgrounds, Mr Afzal said, yet most community leaders were middle-class men aged over 50.

He also questioned why minority communities were thought to have community leaders when white communities did not.

"We've got to turn away those people who are there for all sorts of wrong reasons - ego, kudos, just because they're there in the right place," Mr Afzal said.

"I think I used the word lazy yesterday, I think the state and the authorities are lazy here - they go to the usual suspects.

"They should be talking to young people, young women invariably, in order to get them to understand and learn from them what it is that needs to be done, rather than simply impose it."

Barking raid: Scaffolding truck arrives

Back to the raids in Barking, which appear to the Met's response to last night's outrage.

Furqan Nabi, a witness to the early morning arrests, said he saw four men lying face down on the floor.

One looked over 50, and another man looked at least 60 years old and had a beard, the 35-year-old neighbour said.

A third man was in his late 20s or early 30s, he said. He could not see the fourth man properly.

Around 20 emergency services vehicles were present, he added.

A scaffolding truck parked inside the police cordon by the block of flats just before 2.30pm.

Workers began bringing equipment round to the right hand side of the apartment block where the flat belonging to those arrested is thought to be.

Macron underlines importance of Europe in fighting terrorism in phone call to May

French President Emmanuel Macron underlined the "importance of European cooperation" in the fight against terrorism when he telephoned Theresa May this afternoon to offer his support and condolences after the latest attack in London, his office said.

He also stressed the "importance of of fighting against the spread of terrorist propaganda on social media."

Mrs May said she would continue to update the French president on the four French citizens injured in the attack and promised to guarantee the security of the large French community in London who today are voting in the first round of France's parliamentary elections, the Elysée said in a statement that noted that the two leaders spoke in English.

The Australian woman who was injured is 'unable to speak' but will recover

A 31-year-old Australian who was stabbed in the neck after finishing her shift as a waitress in Borough Market has been unable to speak but gave a thumbs up to her mother from hospital and wrote: “Bit of pain but I will survive.”

Candice Hedge, one of two Australians caught up in the attack on Saturday night, was dining with her boyfriend – and co-worker - at the bar of Elliot’s restaurant, where the pair had just completed their shifts. He heard some commotion and ran outside, only to return to find Ms Hedge clutching her bleeding neck.

She was unable to speak after surgery but later wrote on Facebook: "I'm doing OK. Still in hospital, but all in the clear. I really can't talk. The f----- stabbed me in the neck. Don't worry too much. I love you all."

Kim Del Toro, Ms Hedge’s mother, said her daughter made contact via Skype and gave a “thumbs up”.

"She can't talk. She's been stabbed around her neck, her throat. She's all bandaged up," Ms Del Toro  told Fairfax Media.

"She went into surgery, but she's going to be fine, thank goodness. She couldn't speak, but I got to see her and she gave me the thumbs up, so I knew that she was OK."

Ms Hedge, from Brisbane, has been living in London on a working holiday for almost 12 months.

Brian Hedge, her grandfather, said she tried to hide during the attack but was spotted by one of the terrorists who stabbed her in the throat.

She reportedly wrote in another message to her friends and family on Facebook: “Hey everyone, just so you know I’m doing ok. Bit of pain but I will survive. Thanks for your thoughts and well wishes. Love to all.”

Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s prime minister, said officials were still making inquiries about the other Australian believed to have been injured in the attack.

"This attack is yet another cruel example of the new reality with which we live, the ever present threat of murderous Islamist terrorists, intent to harm our communities, our way of life and the freedoms we hold dear,” he said.

•  A British Transport Police (BTP) officer and an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer are in hospital with serious injuries but neither are believed to be in a life-threatening condition, Scotland Yard said. The BTP officer, who was on duty, was one of the first to the scene after he responded to calls for help from the public, the force said. He suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed in the face, head and leg, wounds which BTP said are not thought to be life-threatening.

• New Zealander Oliver Dowling is reported to have been left in a coma after being stabbed in the face, neck and stomach. Mr Dowling, 32, from Christchurch, is said to have had four hours of surgery for his injuries and is an induced coma.According to the Mirror, his sister Freddy Dowling said on Facebook: "Doctors are very happy with how he's come out the other side. A massive thank to the University of London Hospital for their tireless efforts in helping my brother out." It was reported his girlfriend, Marie Bondeville, was also injured.

• Sunday Express business editor Geoff Ho was left in intensive care after being stabbed in the throat when he tried to help a wounded bouncer. Mr Ho was filmed being led away from the scene by a policeman, clutching his neck and with his shirt off. According to the Mirror, he wrote on Facebook: "Don't know whether it was stupid or noble to jump in and break up the fight outside the Southwark Tavern, but two a***s trying to do over the lone bouncer on the door isn't happening on my watch." Friend Isabelle Oderberg tweeted: "We have found Geoff. He is in intensive care." She told Melbourne newspaper The Age: "He is actually a martial artist and I wouldn't be surprised if he would have stood up and been counted because he's just that type of person."

• Australian woman Candice Hedge is reported to be one of two Australians injured. The Courier Mail newspaper reported that she was stabbed in the neck while eating dinner with her boyfriend after finishing a shift at Elliot's restaurant in London Bridge. The paper reported that the 31-year-old had her throat slashed after a man grabbed her from behind. She reportedly wrote on Facebook: "Hey everyone, just so you know im doing ok. Bit of pain but I will survive. Thanks for your thoughts and well wishes. Love to all."

• Canadian authorities said one of its citizens was "directly affected" by the attack, and that consular officials are offering support.

Prince Harry meets Muslim community in Singapore

Prince Harry has eaten with a Muslim community breaking its Ramadan fast - as words of sympathy were said for the victims of the London terrorist attack.

Before the Prince and others began a simple dish of dates and porridge as the families of the seven people killed by the attackers were remembered.

Harry, who is on a two-day trip to Singapore, was visiting a community centre run by a Muslim-faith led voluntary welfare organisation called Jamiyah Singapore, which provides a range of services from help for recovering addicts to residential homes for young people.

Minutes before the sun went down and the call to prayer was made by an Islamic scholar, Muhammad Rafiuddin Ismail, secretary-general of Jamiyah, said: "Our thoughts go out to the families of the victims of the London terror attack last night."

Harry bowed his head as he began speaking and the secretary general added: "Let peace and harmony prevail in communities all over the world."

BREAKING NEWS: 12 arrested in Barking

Police investigating the London Bridge terror attacks which left seven people dead and dozens more injured have arrested 12 people.

They were detained after an armed raid in Barking, east London, the day after the van and knife rampage by three terrorists who were shot dead by police.

Scotland Yard said the investigation into the "horrific attack" at London Bridge and Borough Market was progressing rapidly with officers searching several addresses in the area.

The arrests in connection with the attacks came as Prime Minister Theresa May warned that Britain is in the grip of a spate of copycat terror plots and it emerged that an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer was among the 48 people injured by the terrorists.

Teenager found safe

A 17-year-old girl who went missing during the attack last night has been found, Eleanor Steafel reports.

The family of Aysa Mustafa waited all night for news of Aysa, who did not come home after being at a friend's house in south london for a barbecue.

Her uncle Tamir told The Telegraph they had finally heard from a friend of Aysa's this morning that she was safe and was on their way home.

He said: "She was due home at 22.30 last night and when she didn't come back my mother started to worry. I was ringing her and ringing her but she wasn't picking up.

"Her friends said she had left the party and was on her way home.

"She would have had to have walked through Borough Market. I haven't spoken to her yet so I don't know if she saw it all happen. But we know she's safe."

Tamir, whose parents look after Aysa at their home just a stone's throw from the bridge, on Porter Street, said he had been out watching the football when he started receiving frantic calls from his parents who didn't know where Aysa was. 

He believes her phone battery may have died and as the whole area was cordoned off she couldn't get home or let her grandparents know where she was.

"They tried to leave to look for her but they were told to stay inside by police. The road was full of police. My mum said she heard the shots and explosions from inside the house."

"We've got to do that. We've got to continue to say 'we're building the Kingdom of God in this place, and that looks like a diverse and inclusive and celebratory place, not one that's locked down by fear."

• The white van crashed outside The Barrowboy & Banker pub on Borough High Street, where three men left the vehicle and apparently ran down steps and along Green Dragon Court, heading towards Borough Market where they began stabbing people in pubs and restaurants.

• Witnesses said three men ran into the Black And Blue restaurant on Stoney Street and began stabbing people indiscriminately, including one person in the face and neck.

• A knifeman also stormed the El Pastor restaurant on Stoney Street, forcing diners and staff to take shelter.

• Another man, journalist Geoff Ho, was stabbed at the Southwark Tavern. Witnesses saw injured people in the Mudlark pub, while others at the Katzenjammers Bierhall in Southwark Street helped a person who had been stabbed.

• Police searching for the knifemen went through bars and restaurants as staff and drinkers hid.

• 10.16pm - Eight minutes after police were called three male suspects were shot dead by marksmen near the Wheatsheaf pub on Stoney Street.

• The men were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later found to be hoaxes.

• At least 48 patients were taken to five hospitals, London Ambulance Service said, with more than 80 medics having been sent to the scene.

• 12.25am on Sunday - Both incidents were declared by the Metropolitan Police as terror attacks.

The Telegraph's Harry Yorke was working into the small hours last night covering the attack.

He ran into more than a hundred Juventus fans who arrived back at the Andaz Hotel, Liverpool Street, after the Champions League final in Cardiff to find "dozens" of police officers standing in the foyer area as up to 30 casualties from the London Bridge attack were taken their for treatment.

Roberto and Andrea Poligino, two brothers from Turin, said they arrived back at the hotel at 3am to find more than "50 police" on the ground floor, adding that many fans were "confused and frightened" and believed they had walked into a "serious problem."

Spaniard among dozens wounded

Spain's Foreign Ministry says that one Spaniard is among the dozens wounded in the London attacks.

A ministry spokesperson told The Associated Press that the Spanish man has been taken to a hospital where he is being treated for wounds described as not serious. The spokesperson spoke anonymously in line with ministry policy.

Spain's King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy have expressed their condolences for the victims of the attacks.

The Spanish Royal Family wrote on Twitter: "The British people will overcome this barbarism and senselessness. We are united today in pain and in our tireless defense of freedom."

Pope Francis in his weekly Angelus address for Pentecost called for prayers Sunday for the victims of the London Bridge attack and their families:

Italian papers are quoting Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, aged 25, who was returning to his London home after watching the Champions League final with a friend when he crossed the path of the fleeing terrorist being chased by police.

Barking armed raid latest

Scotland Yard has so far been unable to confirm whether the the armed police operation in Barking has any link to the attacks.

Nizaur Rahman, 33, lives opposite the block of flats where the raid took place.

She said: "I was woken by the sound of a loud bang like a gunshot or explosion before 7am. I looked out of the window and saw nine CID vans and then ambulances."

Ali Nabi, 35, lives in the flat above the raid in Elizabeth Fry flats, Barking.

"I have lived here three years but never seen them before," he said.

"I heard the police shouting 'get down, get down', I looked out of my window and they were laid on the floor. All Asian men in black religious robes. A woman was with them but later released.

Desperate family search for missing girl

We saw this happen with the Manchester attack, the desperate search for loved ones in the aftermath.

Now stories of people missing are beginning to emerge from last night's attack.

Relatives of Asya Mustafa, who has not been heard of since last night, have been looking for her, reports Helena Horton.

According to her aunt, Asya Mustafa was walking home through Borough Market and is not answering her phone.

She was due to return home to her family when the incident happened.

Members of her family posted in the early hours of Sunday morning saying the young woman still had not been found.

Her aunt, Kezi Alam, wrote on Facebook: "My niece Asya Mustafa was on route home to london bridge and we haven't heard from her. Please keep her in your prayers and if anyone has seen or spoken to her and knows she is ok let us know. Please share everyone we are besides ourselves."

Later, she posted: "4am no news! Awaiting the casualty line to contact us back. Her phone is off since it happened and she was due to return home when the incident happened. Her walk home is borough market. Praying so hard. If we hear we will update. Thank you for all your prayers and offer of help and support x"

Intelligence sharing with US will happen, Cressida Dick says

Police will be sharing intelligence about the London attacks with the United States - after a spat about leaked evidence about the Manchester attack.

Politicians in the US openly briefed the media on what they had been told about Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi and his "cell of Isis-inspired terrorists".

The National Police Chiefs' Council condemned the revelations - which included the publication of bomb fragments and the backpack used by Abedi - saying it "undermines our investigations and the confidence of victims, witnesses and their families".

When questioned about whether intelligence about the London attacks would be sent across the Atlantic, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said she was assuming information would be shared "appropriately".

She said: "We have a good working relationship with our American colleagues, normally share certain types of information with them and indeed depend on them to help keep this country safe.

"I cannot give you information at the moment of whether we have or we haven't, it's very early stages, but my working assumption is that we will, of course, be sharing information appropriately with our American colleagues."

Two Australians 'directly affected'

Two Australians were directly affected in an attack in London on Saturday night, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.

One of the victims was confirmed to be in hospital, while Australian authorities were working to determine the status of the second person, Turnbull told at a news conference on Sunday.

The Australian government has advised its citizens in the UK to avoid the London Bridge and Borough Market areas where militants killed at least six people and wounded more than 30.

"This attack is yet another cruel example of the new reality in which we live, the ever-present threat of murderous Islamist terrorists, intent to harm our communities, our way of life and the freedoms we hold dear," Turnbull said.

Ukip refuse to suspend campaigning

Ukip have broken with the other main political parties in refusing to suspend General Election campaigning in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack.

Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Greens have all put national campaigning on hold at least until this evening in respect for those killed and injured.

But Ukip leader Paul Nuttall said that a second disruption to the campaign - following a three-day pause after the Manchester suicide bomb - was "precisely what the extremists would want us to do" and could lead to more attacks.

Not possible to delay election, says David Davis

Brexit Secretary David Davis said he did not believe it would be legally possible to extend the election campaign by delaying polling day to a later date.

Mr Davis told BBC interviewer Andrew Marr:

Mr Davis said he thought that the election was "locked in" to the scheduled date, and that the public would want that to remain the case.

Mr Davis said it "may well be" that the attacks were intended to disrupt the election, adding: "In which case, all the more reason not to defer, not to deflect, to as far as possible within the bounds of propriety to not let this pull us off course."

He said he expected the suspension of campaigning to be "relatively brief".

Seventh victim has died, Met boss confirms

Met Commissioner Cressida Dick is making a statement outside New Scotland Yard. She has just confirmed a seventh victim has died following last night's attack.

She described the London Bridge  terror attack as "appalling and tragic" adding that it was "something we  hoped we would not see again".

She added: "This is a fast-moving investigation, we have very significant resources deployed."

Ms Dick said she believed that there were three people involved in the attack and they had all been shot dead by police.

But she added: "Of course it is a very complex and confusing scene so it is important we make sure there is no one else outstanding. We do not believe there is but we must make sure."

Manchester concert will go on

Assistant chief constable Garry Shewan from Greater Manchester Police said the force was "deeply saddened" by the attacks in London, but that events in Manchester would carry on as planned.

He said: "There are two large-scale events taking place in Greater Manchester today and we would like to assure people that these will still take place, but with additional security in place to ensure the security of everyone.

"There will be additional security checks taking place and everyone will be searched, including bags.

"We would ask people not to bring bags if they can, as this will help speed up entry."

14 casualties taken to King's College Hospital

Fourteen people injured in the attack were taken to King's College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, south London.

A spokesman said: "The Emergency Department at King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) received 14 casualties (six females and eight males) following the incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market in central London.

"One patient has been discharged."

There were a total of 48 injured and six killed.

New Zealand man named as stab victim

Reports in New Zealand have named a man believed to have suffered multiple stab wounds in the London terror attack.

Oliver Dowling, 32, from Christchurch, received multiple stab wounds to the face, neck and stomach but has since recovered after a four-hour long surgery, according to his sister Freddy.

His sister also said in her Facebook post that her brother was able to recover because the attackers missed all his vital organs.

It is believed his girlfriend Marie Bondeville was also injured but her status is unknown.

"Doctors are very happy with how he's come out the other side. A massive thank to the University of London Hospital for their tireless efforts in helping my brother out!!" his sister Freddy has written.

How world leaders have reacted

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a statement that she learned with "sadness and dismay" of the attack.

She added:

European leaders sent messages of sympathy and solidarity to the UK via social media.

The President of the European Council Donald Tusk said: "My heart and mind are in London after another cowardly attack. Europe stands by UK in fight against terrorism."

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said: "Following latest London incidents with horror. Thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Please stay safe."

And the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said: "We mourn in solidarity with the victims and the families of heinous London Bridge attack.These acts must be stopped. £UnitedAgainstTerrorism."

Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy offered "solidarity and support" and Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite said that the "London spirit" was "stronger than fear".

Belgian PM Charles Michel said: "A new tragedy in London, we all stand with UK."

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charles Flanagan said: "For the second time in two weeks, the ordinary people of the UK have been subjected to cowardly and barbaric attacks. Ireland stands with the UK and condemns these acts utterly.

Media in France reported that two French citizens were injured in the attack.

A statement from the Elysee said: "The attack which struck London, days after that which took place in Manchester, is a new abominable and cowardly attack against our free society.

Election 'must carry on'

A number of senior politcians have urged Mrs May to resist calls to delay the election in response to the tragedy.

Conservative former foreign minister Alistair Burt said: "We don't have a Parliament or MPs at present. If there's no general election, when would we get one?

The Democratic Unionist Party's Jeffrey Donaldson said the election should "absolutely not" be delayed: "If we suspend our democratic process it feeds the warped belief of the terrorists that they can win. We need Parliament back."

Meanwhile, the pre-election edition of BBC1's influential The Andrew Marr Show was cancelled in response to the outrage.

A journalist believed to have been injured in the attack last night has reportedly been found.

British Transport Police officer 'seriously injured'

A British Transport Police (BTP) officer was stabbed in the face as he responded to the terrorist incident at London Bridge.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a vehicle ploughing into pedestrians around London Bridge and stabbings at Borough Market shortly after 10pm.

The BTP officer, who was on duty, was one of the first on the scene after he responded to calls for help from the public, the force said.

A spokeswoman said it was believed he was targeted by one of the three attackers who were later shot dead by police.

BTP said in a statement: "He received injuries to his head, face and leg, which, at this time, are believed to be serious but not life threatening."

"The officer is currently being treated in a central London hospital and his family are with him while he receives treatment."

The attacks on London Bridge and Borough Market mark the second time the General Election has been disrupted by an act of terrorism.

It comes less than two weeks after the parties suspended campaigning following the Manchester attack in which suicide bomber Salman Abedi killed 22 people attending an Ariana Grande concert.

There was no immediate announcement whether there would be a further suspension following the latest incident - which came just days before voters are due go to the polls on June 8.

London Ambulance Service states it has taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London.

"We have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London following the incident at London Bridge," the London Ambulance Service's assistant director of operations, Peter Rhodes, said in a statement on Sunday.

"We have also treated a number of people at the scene for less serious injuries," he added.

One eyewitness, named only as Gerard, told the BBC: "I saw a geezer lying on the floor saying he'd been stabbed

"I saw these three Muslim guys run up and started stabbing this girl. They attacked her and stabbed another guy.

"They started running up the road, stabbed the bouncer at the Tavern.

"I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools, chairs, but I was defenceless.

"They were running up saying 'this is for Allah'. 

"They stabbed this girl maybe ten, 15 times. She was saying 'help me, help me'."

He claimed he had hit one of the attackers on the back of the head by throwing things at him, and was chased, but escaped unharmed.

John Stokes, London bus tour guide, said he counted eight people lying in the road or pavement receiving medical treatment on London Bridge.

He had arrived on the scene with a bus full of tourists moments after the attack, initially thinking it was a one-off traffic accident before seeing the number of casualties.

After the police arrived, he said, an office banged on the bus door and told everyone on the bus to run towards Monument.

"All the tourists on our bus ran for their lives," he said.

A picture has been shared on social media showing a man lying on the ground who appears to have canisters strapped to him.

It was taken in the Borough Market area. 

The BBC earlier tonight reported an unnamed eyewitness, a security guard who works across multiple bars and pubs in Borough Market, claiming to have seen a man with a canister strapped to his abdomen.

Stressing that the reports were unverified, the news channel claims the man saw the attackers after receiving a call from a colleague in another bar who said people had been stabbed. 

The eyewitness described people running away screaming from three men, one wearing a red and black top. He claimed one man had a canister taped to his abdomen.

The man and his colleagues tried to throw chairs at the three attackers, who were going in and out of different bars, before helping to evacuate the area

As in previous attacks, Facebook has created a tool for people in the area to mark themselves as safe.

The feature allows users in the area to broadcast to their Facebook friends that they are safe, and for those concerned to check on their friends.

Knifeman shouted 'this is for Allah' - reports 

An eyewitness on London Bridge, told the BBC he saw three men stabbing people indiscriminately, shouting "this is for Allah". 

He told how he saw a van driving on the pavement with people running out of the way, before three men got out.

"They literally just started kicking them, punching them, they took out knives. It was a rampage really," he said.

"They headed down towards Southwark Cathedral towards the bar, and starting running at people.

"People at the bar started fighting back. then the three of them decided to make their way up to the bridge

"A woman was staring at them and they started stabbing her.

"Throughout the whole way across the bridge, there were people littered across bleeding. People were trying to help each other."

He added he had heard them shouting "this is for Allah".

Theresa May to chair a Cobra meeting on Sunday morning

Theresa May will chair a Cobra meeting about tonight's incidents first thing on Sunday morning. 

It is understood that the Prime Minister was in her Maidenhead constituency when she was alerted to the news.  So-called Cobra meetings are named after Cabinet Office Briefing Room A, where crisis response meetings are held.  They usually include the Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers as well as intelligence and security officials. 

Mrs May held two Cobra meetings in one day less than two weeks ago on the day of the Manchester bombing.

Among the injured are:

•  A British Transport Police (BTP) officer and an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer are in hospital with serious injuries but neither are believed to be in a life-threatening condition, Scotland Yard said. The BTP officer, who was on duty, was one of the first to the scene after he responded to calls for help from the public, the force said. He suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed in the face, head and leg, wounds which BTP said are not thought to be life-threatening.

• New Zealander Oliver Dowling is reported to have been left in a coma after being stabbed in the face, neck and stomach. Mr Dowling, 32, from Christchurch, is said to have had four hours of surgery for his injuries and is an induced coma.According to the Mirror, his sister Freddy Dowling said on Facebook: "Doctors are very happy with how he's come out the other side. A massive thank to the University of London Hospital for their tireless efforts in helping my brother out." It was reported his girlfriend, Marie Bondeville, was also injured.

• Sunday Express business editor Geoff Ho was left in intensive care after being stabbed in the throat when he tried to help a wounded bouncer. Mr Ho was filmed being led away from the scene by a policeman, clutching his neck and with his shirt off. According to the Mirror, he wrote on Facebook: "Don't know whether it was stupid or noble to jump in and break up the fight outside the Southwark Tavern, but two a***s trying to do over the lone bouncer on the door isn't happening on my watch." Friend Isabelle Oderberg tweeted: "We have found Geoff. He is in intensive care." She told Melbourne newspaper The Age: "He is actually a martial artist and I wouldn't be surprised if he would have stood up and been counted because he's just that type of person."

• Australian woman Candice Hedge is reported to be one of two Australians injured. The Courier Mail newspaper reported that she was stabbed in the neck while eating dinner with her boyfriend after finishing a shift at Elliot's restaurant in London Bridge. The paper reported that the 31-year-old had her throat slashed after a man grabbed her from behind. She reportedly wrote on Facebook: "Hey everyone, just so you know im doing ok. Bit of pain but I will survive. Thanks for your thoughts and well wishes. Love to all."

• Canadian authorities said one of its citizens was "directly affected" by the attack, and that consular officials are offering support.

Prince Harry meets Muslim community in Singapore

Prince Harry has eaten with a Muslim community breaking its Ramadan fast - as words of sympathy were said for the victims of the London terrorist attack.

Before the Prince and others began a simple dish of dates and porridge as the families of the seven people killed by the attackers were remembered.

Harry, who is on a two-day trip to Singapore, was visiting a community centre run by a Muslim-faith led voluntary welfare organisation called Jamiyah Singapore, which provides a range of services from help for recovering addicts to residential homes for young people.

Minutes before the sun went down and the call to prayer was made by an Islamic scholar, Muhammad Rafiuddin Ismail, secretary-general of Jamiyah, said: "Our thoughts go out to the families of the victims of the London terror attack last night."

Harry bowed his head as he began speaking and the secretary general added: "Let peace and harmony prevail in communities all over the world."

BREAKING NEWS: 12 arrested in Barking

Police investigating the London Bridge terror attacks which left seven people dead and dozens more injured have arrested 12 people.

They were detained after an armed raid in Barking, east London, the day after the van and knife rampage by three terrorists who were shot dead by police.

Scotland Yard said the investigation into the "horrific attack" at London Bridge and Borough Market was progressing rapidly with officers searching several addresses in the area.

The arrests in connection with the attacks came as Prime Minister Theresa May warned that Britain is in the grip of a spate of copycat terror plots and it emerged that an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer was among the 48 people injured by the terrorists.

Teenager found safe

A 17-year-old girl who went missing during the attack last night has been found, Eleanor Steafel reports.

The family of Aysa Mustafa waited all night for news of Aysa, who did not come home after being at a friend's house in south london for a barbecue.

Her uncle Tamir told The Telegraph they had finally heard from a friend of Aysa's this morning that she was safe and was on their way home.

He said: "She was due home at 22.30 last night and when she didn't come back my mother started to worry. I was ringing her and ringing her but she wasn't picking up.

"Her friends said she had left the party and was on her way home.

"She would have had to have walked through Borough Market. I haven't spoken to her yet so I don't know if she saw it all happen. But we know she's safe."

Tamir, whose parents look after Aysa at their home just a stone's throw from the bridge, on Porter Street, said he had been out watching the football when he started receiving frantic calls from his parents who didn't know where Aysa was. 

He believes her phone battery may have died and as the whole area was cordoned off she couldn't get home or let her grandparents know where she was.

"They tried to leave to look for her but they were told to stay inside by police. The road was full of police. My mum said she heard the shots and explosions from inside the house."

Trump lashes out at Sadiq Khan

President Trump has continued to tweet about the terror attack, this time launching a broadside at Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, over his reaction. 

"At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed!" Mr Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday afternoon.

The president was referring to a statement by Mr Khan earlier this morning which said he was "grieving" for the victims and insisted that terrorists "would not win."

French president Emmanuel Macron has said authorities would work to help the French victims and increase security for French voters in London casting ballots in legislative elections starting Sunday "to show the force of democracy in the face of enemies of freedom".

The Queen attended church in Windsor this morning where prayers were said for those who lost their lives or were injured in the attack, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Southwark Cathedral has appealed for prayers after the terror attack on its doorstep.

The Cathedral is just a stone's throw from London Bridge and Borough Market where the atrocity was carried out on Saturday night. 

The Very Rev Andrew Dunn said: "I would be encouraging, on this feast of Pentecost, for people to remember the Spirit drove those apostles out of the place where they'd taken refuge from terror and into the streets, proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ in every language to every people and thrilling their hearts. 

"We've got to do that. We've got to continue to say 'we're building the Kingdom of God in this place, and that looks like a diverse and inclusive and celebratory place, not one that's locked down by fear."

What we know so far: A summary

Here is what we know following the terror attack at London Bridge and Borough Market, which has left seven dead and 48 in hospital:

• 10.07pm on Saturday - Ambulance services were called to reports of a white van ploughing through pedestrians on London Bridge, arriving within six minutes.

• 10.08pm - Police were also called to the scene.

• The white van crashed outside The Barrowboy & Banker pub on Borough High Street, where three men left the vehicle and apparently ran down steps and along Green Dragon Court, heading towards Borough Market where they began stabbing people in pubs and restaurants.

• Witnesses said three men ran into the Black And Blue restaurant on Stoney Street and began stabbing people indiscriminately, including one person in the face and neck.

• A knifeman also stormed the El Pastor restaurant on Stoney Street, forcing diners and staff to take shelter.

• Another man, journalist Geoff Ho, was stabbed at the Southwark Tavern. Witnesses saw injured people in the Mudlark pub, while others at the Katzenjammers Bierhall in Southwark Street helped a person who had been stabbed.

• Police searching for the knifemen went through bars and restaurants as staff and drinkers hid.

• 10.16pm - Eight minutes after police were called three male suspects were shot dead by marksmen near the Wheatsheaf pub on Stoney Street.

• The men were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later found to be hoaxes.

• At least 48 patients were taken to five hospitals, London Ambulance Service said, with more than 80 medics having been sent to the scene.

• 12.25am on Sunday - Both incidents were declared by the Metropolitan Police as terror attacks.

• Shortly before 4am, police confirm six people were killed in the rampage.

• A third incident at Vauxhall was a stabbing and unrelated, Scotland Yard said.

• Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said the number of victims from the London attack had risen to seven.

• On Sunday morning police carried out raids in Barking, east London, though the Met could not immediately confirm any link to the attacks.

• After chairing a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee, at 10.35am Prime Minister Theresa May said the UK was experiencing a "new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism" as she condemned the terror attacks.

Juve fans left 'confused and frightened'

The Telegraph's Harry Yorke was working into the small hours last night covering the attack.

He ran into more than a hundred Juventus fans who arrived back at the Andaz Hotel, Liverpool Street, after the Champions League final in Cardiff to find "dozens" of police officers standing in the foyer area as up to 30 casualties from the London Bridge attack were taken their for treatment.

Roberto and Andrea Poligino, two brothers from Turin, said they arrived back at the hotel at 3am to find more than "50 police" on the ground floor, adding that many fans were "confused and frightened" and believed they had walked into a "serious problem."

Spaniard among dozens wounded

Spain's Foreign Ministry says that one Spaniard is among the dozens wounded in the London attacks.

A ministry spokesperson told The Associated Press that the Spanish man has been taken to a hospital where he is being treated for wounds described as not serious. The spokesperson spoke anonymously in line with ministry policy.

Spain's King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy have expressed their condolences for the victims of the attacks.

The Spanish Royal Family wrote on Twitter: "The British people will overcome this barbarism and senselessness. We are united today in pain and in our tireless defense of freedom."

Pope Francis in his weekly Angelus address for Pentecost called for prayers Sunday for the victims of the London Bridge attack and their families:

Italian papers are quoting Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, aged 25, who was returning to his London home after watching the Champions League final with a friend when he crossed the path of the fleeing terrorist being chased by police.

"The explosives belt of that man running away did not seem real to me," Sciotto was quoted saying.

Barking armed raid latest

Scotland Yard has so far been unable to confirm whether the the armed police operation in Barking has any link to the attacks.

Nizaur Rahman, 33, lives opposite the block of flats where the raid took place.

She said: "I was woken by the sound of a loud bang like a gunshot or explosion before 7am. I looked out of the window and saw nine CID vans and then ambulances."

Ali Nabi, 35, lives in the flat above the raid in Elizabeth Fry flats, Barking.

"I have lived here three years but never seen them before," he said.

"I heard the police shouting 'get down, get down', I looked out of my window and they were laid on the floor. All Asian men in black religious robes. A woman was with them but later released.

"One was in his 50s, another had a white beard, the third was in his 30s and the fourth was younger. They were all laid down with their hands cuffed behind their backs. I think it was someone on the ground floor but I've never seen them."

Desperate family search for missing girl

We saw this happen with the Manchester attack, the desperate search for loved ones in the aftermath.

Now stories of people missing are beginning to emerge from last night's attack.

Relatives of Asya Mustafa, who has not been heard of since last night, have been looking for her, reports Helena Horton.

According to her aunt, Asya Mustafa was walking home through Borough Market and is not answering her phone.

She was due to return home to her family when the incident happened.

Members of her family posted in the early hours of Sunday morning saying the young woman still had not been found.

Her aunt, Kezi Alam, wrote on Facebook: "My niece Asya Mustafa was on route home to london bridge and we haven't heard from her. Please keep her in your prayers and if anyone has seen or spoken to her and knows she is ok let us know. Please share everyone we are besides ourselves."

Later, she posted: "4am no news! Awaiting the casualty line to contact us back. Her phone is off since it happened and she was due to return home when the incident happened. Her walk home is borough market. Praying so hard. If we hear we will update. Thank you for all your prayers and offer of help and support x"

Manchester concert now has greater purpose, Ariana Grande's manager says

Ariana Grande's manager Scooter Braun has said the One Love Manchester concert now has a "greater purpose" following the London terror attack, and that all the acts involved are showing "unwavering" support.

Intelligence sharing with US will happen, Cressida Dick says

Police will be sharing intelligence about the London attacks with the United States - after a spat about leaked evidence about the Manchester attack.

Politicians in the US openly briefed the media on what they had been told about Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi and his "cell of Isis-inspired terrorists".

The National Police Chiefs' Council condemned the revelations - which included the publication of bomb fragments and the backpack used by Abedi - saying it "undermines our investigations and the confidence of victims, witnesses and their families".

When questioned about whether intelligence about the London attacks would be sent across the Atlantic, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said she was assuming information would be shared "appropriately".

She said: "We have a good working relationship with our American colleagues, normally share certain types of information with them and indeed depend on them to help keep this country safe.

"I cannot give you information at the moment of whether we have or we haven't, it's very early stages, but my working assumption is that we will, of course, be sharing information appropriately with our American colleagues."

Two Australians were directly affected in an attack in London on Saturday night, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.

One of the victims was confirmed to be in hospital, while Australian authorities were working to determine the status of the second person, Turnbull told at a news conference on Sunday.

The Australian government has advised its citizens in the UK to avoid the London Bridge and Borough Market areas where militants killed at least six people and wounded more than 30.

"This attack is yet another cruel example of the new reality in which we live, the ever-present threat of murderous Islamist terrorists, intent to harm our communities, our way of life and the freedoms we hold dear," Turnbull said.

Ukip refuse to suspend campaigning

Ukip have broken with the other main political parties in refusing to suspend General Election campaigning in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack.

Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Greens have all put national campaigning on hold at least until this evening in respect for those killed and injured.

But Ukip leader Paul Nuttall said that a second disruption to the campaign - following a three-day pause after the Manchester suicide bomb - was "precisely what the extremists would want us to do" and could lead to more attacks.

Not possible to delay election, says David Davis

Brexit Secretary David Davis said he did not believe it would be legally possible to extend the election campaign by delaying polling day to a later date.

Mr Davis told BBC interviewer Andrew Marr:

Mr Davis said he thought that the election was "locked in" to the scheduled date, and that the public would want that to remain the case.

Mr Davis said it "may well be" that the attacks were intended to disrupt the election, adding: "In which case, all the more reason not to defer, not to deflect, to as far as possible within the bounds of propriety to not let this pull us off course."

He said he expected the suspension of campaigning to be "relatively brief".

Seventh victim has died, Met boss confirms

Met Commissioner Cressida Dick is making a statement outside New Scotland Yard. She has just confirmed a seventh victim has died following last night's attack.

She described the London Bridge  terror attack as "appalling and tragic" adding that it was "something we  hoped we would not see again".

She added: "This is a fast-moving investigation, we have very significant resources deployed."

Ms Dick said she believed that there were three people involved in the attack and they had all been shot dead by police.

But she added: "Of course it is a very complex and confusing scene so it is important we make sure there is no one else outstanding. We do not believe there is but we must make sure."

Manchester concert will go on

Assistant chief constable Garry Shewan from Greater Manchester Police said the force was "deeply saddened" by the attacks in London, but that events in Manchester would carry on as planned.

He said: "There are two large-scale events taking place in Greater Manchester today and we would like to assure people that these will still take place, but with additional security in place to ensure the security of everyone.

"There will be additional security checks taking place and everyone will be searched, including bags.

"We would ask people not to bring bags if they can, as this will help speed up entry."

Greens suspend national campaigning

Greens confirmed that they too were suspending national campaigning until the evening, though activities will continue at a local level.

Co-leader Caroline Lucas said: "My heart goes out to all those affected and caught up in these horrific and despicable attacks, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families.

"Deep thanks to our emergency services who have responded again with enormous bravery, and to the many members of the public displaying courage and compassion in the midst of terrible scenes."

14 casualties taken to King's College Hospital

Fourteen people injured in the attack were taken to King's College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, south London.

A spokesman said: "The Emergency Department at King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) received 14 casualties (six females and eight males) following the incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market in central London.

"One patient has been discharged."

There were a total of 48 injured and six killed.

New Zealand man named as stab victim

Reports in New Zealand have named a man believed to have suffered multiple stab wounds in the London terror attack.

Oliver Dowling, 32, from Christchurch, received multiple stab wounds to the face, neck and stomach but has since recovered after a four-hour long surgery, according to his sister Freddy.

His sister also said in her Facebook post that her brother was able to recover because the attackers missed all his vital organs.

It is believed his girlfriend Marie Bondeville was also injured but her status is unknown.

"Doctors are very happy with how he's come out the other side. A massive thank to the University of London Hospital for their tireless efforts in helping my brother out!!" his sister Freddy has written.

How world leaders have reacted

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a statement that she learned with "sadness and dismay" of the attack.

She added:

European leaders sent messages of sympathy and solidarity to the UK via social media.

The President of the European Council Donald Tusk said: "My heart and mind are in London after another cowardly attack. Europe stands by UK in fight against terrorism."

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said: "Following latest London incidents with horror. Thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Please stay safe."

And the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said: "We mourn in solidarity with the victims and the families of heinous London Bridge attack.These acts must be stopped. £UnitedAgainstTerrorism."

Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy offered "solidarity and support" and Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite said that the "London spirit" was "stronger than fear".

Belgian PM Charles Michel said: "A new tragedy in London, we all stand with UK."

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charles Flanagan said: "For the second time in two weeks, the ordinary people of the UK have been subjected to cowardly and barbaric attacks. Ireland stands with the UK and condemns these acts utterly.

Media in France reported that two French citizens were injured in the attack.

A statement from the Elysee said: "The attack which struck London, days after that which took place in Manchester, is a new abominable and cowardly attack against our free society.

"Fellow French citizens are among the injured. France is putting everything in place to assist them."

Election 'must carry on'

A number of senior politcians have urged Mrs May to resist calls to delay the election in response to the tragedy.

Conservative former foreign minister Alistair Burt said: "We don't have a Parliament or MPs at present. If there's no general election, when would we get one?

The Democratic Unionist Party's Jeffrey Donaldson said the election should "absolutely not" be delayed: "If we suspend our democratic process it feeds the warped belief of the terrorists that they can win. We need Parliament back."

Meanwhile, the pre-election edition of BBC1's influential The Andrew Marr Show was cancelled in response to the outrage.

The programme had been due to feature election interviews with Mr Farron, Brexit Secretary David Davis and shadow chancellor John McDonnell.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has speaking about the attack last night.

He says some of those injured in the attack are a critical condition. 

The threat level remains the same at severe, meaning an attack is highly likely, but he said Londoners would see an increased police presence. 

He also said it was not a mistake to reduce the terror threat from critical after the Manchester attack. 

Asked about some calls to postpone the election, he said he does not support such a move. "One of the things we can do to show we are not cowed is to vote in the general election on Thursday," he said.

Journalist in 'intensive care'

A journalist believed to have been injured in the attack last night has reportedly been found.

Friends had been searching for Geoff Ho, a business editor with Express Newspapers, who had been in pub when the attack unfolded.

'We hid under the table'

More witness accounts have been emerging from the terror attack last night.

A taxi driver told Sky News that he spoke to a couple who held the door shut of the Black and Blue Restaurant so some could escape through the back door because "bad people were outside". The people then overcame them and got in.

British Transport Police officer 'seriously injured'

A British Transport Police (BTP) officer was stabbed in the face as he responded to the terrorist incident at London Bridge.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a vehicle ploughing into pedestrians around London Bridge and stabbings at Borough Market shortly after 10pm.

The BTP officer, who was on duty, was one of the first on the scene after he responded to calls for help from the public, the force said.

A spokeswoman said it was believed he was targeted by one of the three attackers who were later shot dead by police.

BTP said in a statement: "He received injuries to his head, face and leg, which, at this time, are believed to be serious but not life threatening."

"The officer is currently being treated in a central London hospital and his family are with him while he receives treatment."

Six people have died in the terrorist incidents in London and three attackers have been shot dead by police, Scotland Yard said. 

Police said they believed there were no more than three attackers.

"Armed response officers then responded very quickly and bravely and confronted the three male suspects who were shot and killed on Borough Market," Mark Rowley, Britain's top anti-terrorism officer, said.

"Sadly, six people have died in addition to the three attackers shot by police," he said.

London Ambulance Service states it has taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London.

One eyewitness, named only as Gerard, told the BBC: "I saw a geezer lying on the floor saying he'd been stabbed

"I saw these three Muslim guys run up and started stabbing this girl. They attacked her and stabbed another guy.

"They started running up the road, stabbed the bouncer at the Tavern.

"I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools, chairs, but I was defenceless.

"They were running up saying 'this is for Allah'. 

"They stabbed this girl maybe ten, 15 times. She was saying 'help me, help me'."

He claimed he had hit one of the attackers on the back of the head by throwing things at him, and was chased, but escaped unharmed.

John Stokes, London bus tour guide, said he counted eight people lying in the road or pavement receiving medical treatment on London Bridge.

He had arrived on the scene with a bus full of tourists moments after the attack, initially thinking it was a one-off traffic accident before seeing the number of casualties.

After the police arrived, he said, an office banged on the bus door and told everyone on the bus to run towards Monument.

"All the tourists on our bus ran for their lives," he said.

A picture has been shared on social media showing a man lying on the ground who appears to have canisters strapped to him.

It was taken in the Borough Market area. 

The BBC earlier tonight reported an unnamed eyewitness, a security guard who works across multiple bars and pubs in Borough Market, claiming to have seen a man with a canister strapped to his abdomen.

Stressing that the reports were unverified, the news channel claims the man saw the attackers after receiving a call from a colleague in another bar who said people had been stabbed. 

The eyewitness described people running away screaming from three men, one wearing a red and black top. He claimed one man had a canister taped to his abdomen.

The man and his colleagues tried to throw chairs at the three attackers, who were going in and out of different bars, before helping to evacuate the area

The feature allows users in the area to broadcast to their Facebook friends that they are safe, and for those concerned to check on their friends.

Knifeman shouted 'this is for Allah' - reports 

An eyewitness on London Bridge, told the BBC he saw three men stabbing people indiscriminately, shouting "this is for Allah". 

He told how he saw a van driving on the pavement with people running out of the way, before three men got out.

"They literally just started kicking them, punching them, they took out knives. It was a rampage really," he said.

"They headed down towards Southwark Cathedral towards the bar, and starting running at people.

"People at the bar started fighting back. then the three of them decided to make their way up to the bridge

"A woman was staring at them and they started stabbing her.

"Throughout the whole way across the bridge, there were people littered across bleeding. People were trying to help each other."

He added he had heard them shouting "this is for Allah".

Theresa May to chair a Cobra meeting on Sunday morning

Theresa May will chair a Cobra meeting about tonight's incidents first thing on Sunday morning. 

It is understood that the Prime Minister was in her Maidenhead constituency when she was alerted to the news.  So-called Cobra meetings are named after Cabinet Office Briefing Room A, where crisis response meetings are held.  They usually include the Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers as well as intelligence and security officials. 

Mrs May held two Cobra meetings in one day less than two weeks ago on the day of the Manchester bombing.
