London cinema chain Curzon bought by US private equity giant with 16 sites saved
Curzon has been purchased by US private equity giant Fortress The company, which also owns Majestic Wine, Poundstretcher, and the Punch pub group, confirmed the acquisition of the arthouse cinema chain for an undisclosed amount.
The transaction promises to cement the future of Curzon's 16 locations, its film distribution branch, and online streaming operation, and secures over 350 jobs in the process.
Curzon, a popular name in the British film industry since 1934 and known for bringing some of the earliest foreign language films to UK shores, had previously been auctioned off this year after former owner, American real estate tycoon Charles Cohen—who took over in 2019—faced a lawsuit by Fortress over defaults on multimillion-dollar loans. The investment firm became Curzon's sole bidder at a foreclosure auction.
