London Marathon Tightens Security

Following the fatal explosions at the finish line area of the Boston marathon, the organisers of Sunday's race in London are reviewing security measures.

Nick Bitel, the chief executive of the London Marathon, said at this stage there were no plans to cancel the race.

He said: "We are deeply saddened and shocked by the news from Boston. Our immediate thoughts are with the people there and their families. It is a very sad day for athletics and for our friends and colleagues in marathon running.

"Our security plan is developed jointly with the Metropolitan Police and we were in contact with them as soon as we heard the news."

Chief Superintendent Julia Pendry of the Met Police added: "A security plan is in place for the London Marathon. We will be reviewing our security arrangements in partnership with London Marathon."

Around 35,000 runners will take part in the 33rd running of the race around the capital on Sunday morning.
