London protest against Rwanda deportations plan, ahead of UK's decision to call off first flight
Activists and refugees staged a protest on Wednesday 8 June outside the Rwandan High Commission in London, ahead of what was planned to be the first Home Office deportation flight to Rwanda on 14 June. On Friday 10 June it was disclosed that the UK Home Office would not now deport five asylum seekers to Rwanda, amid a legal challenge to their deportation. The information was revealed in documents submitted by government lawyers to the High Court as part of that case. It was expected the flight would carry around 130 people to the African nation and that they would be encouraged to seek asylum there, regardless of their country of origin. The controversial proposal has caused outrage with human rights groups.
