A second woman who claims Ghislaine Maxwell groomed her for abuse by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein while she was a teenager took the witness stand in the British socialite’s sex trafficking trial on Monday. The woman, who is testifying under the pseudonym Kate, is the second of four women named in a 2021 indictment against Maxwell. Kate said she was 17 when she met Maxwell for tea at her London townhouse in 1994.

The world’s first plant-based Covid vaccine has shown strong protection against the virus in clinical trials and has been sent to regulators for authorisation across the world, its creators have announced. Medicago, based in Quebec City, on Tuesday confirmed that its two-dose vaccine was 71 per cent effective against the disease in a late-stage study and that no serious safety issues were detected. The company said its vaccine was effective against the Delta variant but results did not include the Omicron variant, which was not circulating at the time of the study period.

The United Kingdom saw a record rise in the number of deaths caused by alcohol misuse last year, which public health officials said was linked to the wider social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some 8,974 people died of alcohol-specific causes in 2020, 18.6% more than in 2019 and the largest increase since records began in 2001, Britain's Office for National Statistics said. Previous data from health authorities in England had shown a 21% rise in deaths from alcoholic liver disease last year, when COVID-19 lockdowns closed pubs but led to many heavy drinkers consuming more alcohol at home.
