If you are thinking about singing your heart out on the Tube after a good night out, you may want to think twice - unless you wouldn’t mind a penalty.

We all know the London Underground to have its array of musicians and buskers as we commute around the city, but it is illegal for passengers themselves to sing.

Under TFL railway byelaws “no person on the railway shall to the annoyance of any person shall sing” unless you have been given written permission from the Operator. This unknown rule applies to all chanting, singing and performing on the train or platform.

Passengers who are caught breaking this law by singing or chanting could be faced with a fine or cautioned by TfL staff.

This byelaw does not apply to buskers. TfL has a scheme for buskers called the London Underground Busking Scheme which allows musicians to showcase their talent live in certain stations across London such as Stratford, Piccadilly Circus, Marble Arch and Victoria.

This scheme has allowed buskers to go on to perform in front royalty or work for the English National Opera. Many big names once busked on the Tube such as Jessie J and Ed Sheeran.

Sadly, normal travellers will have to save their vocal talents for Britain's Got Talent and not the Tube.

This byelaw is to ensure that all passengers can travel in comfort and ensure that the one of the busiest travel systems in London has an orderly atmosphere.

There are some other rules that are not well known to commuters which we’ve seen to be broken such as spitting on the railway and distributing anything promotional on the Tube.

However, these unknown laws are unlikely to stop travellers from showcasing the singing after few to many drinks or chanting their favourite football chant.
