London weather: Capital basks in glorious spring sunshine as temperatures hit 17C

Londoners basked in glorious sunshine as soaring temperatures saw spring arrive in the capital.

The mercury peaked at 17.5C in St James’s Park on Thursday – the highest temperature in the UK and of the spring season so far.

Many people took to social media to share pictures of the stunning blue skies across London.

Paul Downey said on Twitter: "Ah, London. Looking even more gorgeous in the sunshine."

Amanda Hills added: "Beautiful #StPaulscathedral looking glorious in the spring sun today."

Another Twitter user wrote: "Beautiful views this afternoon from Abacus Belsize! Let's hope this sunshine lasts!"

Alex Cull said: "I am so grateful everyday for having this beautiful view on my work doorstep. And sunshine makes it even better!"

David Kaizer wrote: "Love #London in the sunshine."

Mark Smith added: "St James's Park in the spring sunshine today."

Temperatures will drop in the capital tomorrow to around 15C as cloud arrives from the south west.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “London is going to escape cloud until midday on Friday when cloud will arrive from the south west.

“Temperatures will be around 14 to 15C.

“Over the weekend temperatures will remain around the same on Saturday, with some cloud and rain moving through.

“On Sunday it will feel cooler with periods of quite heavy rain.”
