Londoner's Diary: Miriam González says Brexit is strawberry crumble

Britain is at baking point. Miriam González Durántez, right, lawyer and wife of former Lib-Dem leader Nick Clegg, says Brexit is best thought of as a strawberry crumble.

González Durántez runs a food blog, Mumandsons, where she posts culinary offerings and political musings. Her latest recipe is a Nigella Lawson- inspired crumble, which she thinks is a good metaphor for Britain leaving the EU. Ingredients include hazelnuts, zest of lemon and, of course, strawberries.

“The crumble, just like Brexit, seems fine on the outside, though if you look attentively you can see that there is a mess bubbling up inside,” she writes. “And it will definitely fall apart when you serve it, no matter how hard you try. Though to be honest, I am not sure the messiest of the crumbles does any justice to the mess we are all in.”

She should know. As a partner at legal firm Dechert, she advises clients on Brexit. Let’s hope they’re homegrown strawberries.
