The Londoner was happily browsing the Tatler website yesterday when we came across its Bystander section, a collection of images from the society bible’s most important parties. One selection, from earlier this week, documents businessman David Tang’s Chinese New Year party held at China Tang, his restaurant at The Dorchester. Who should we spot, sitting together at the dinner table, but former Ukip leader Nigel Farage and Monica Lewinsky, one-time White House intern and anti-bullying campaigner? Is this London’s unlikeliest pairing?

Both Farage and Lewinsky indulged the dress code, which called for a red item of clothing in keeping with Chinese New Year traditions (Farage had a red tie). They were joined by an odd menagerie of guests including Cherie Blair, Sarah Ferguson and Sir Michael Caine, who sipped champagne and struggled with the chopsticks.

But what could this fascinating duo have possibly talked about? One had a highly inappropriate relationship with a US President and has maintained an unlikely presence in public life. The other is Monica Lewinsky.
