Snow in London: Capital blanketed after cold snap takes hold as Londoners share their best pictures

Londoners have been sharing their best wintry weather pictures after parts of the capital experienced flurries of snow as a cold snap took hold across the country.

Temperatures struggled to get much above freezing on Tuesday evening, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for ice covering much of the UK.

Excited Londoners shared pictures and video as snow began to fall across the capital, with snowflakes being reported first in Ruislip in the early afternoon before hitting the rest of London.

Londoners joked that the capital was likely to grind to a halt after the snow appeared. One person wrote on Twitter: “London is about to freak out and shut down.”

“London, you have ruined snow for me... usually I’d be jumping with joy seeing snow... but instead it’s filled me with dread travelling into work tomorrow,” one person wrote.

Commuters on Wednesday morning are facing temperatures of just 3C as the yellow weather warning for ice is set to continue until 11am after the wintry showers on Tuesday.

Signal failures were causing delays across the Tube network this morning, with minor delays on the Northern line and TfL rail as well as a part-suspension of the London Overground at Romford.

Services on most overground lines were running without fault during the start of the morning, although SWR passengers faced some delays due to a signal failure at Dorking.

Airports advised customers to speak to their airlines for any flight information but said they were operating as normal following the flurries of snow across the capital.

Travellers in the north of the country faced some disruption on Tuesday night as roads were closed and a handful of flights were delayed due to the icy conditions.

By mid-morning Police Scotland had received 125 reports of road incidents on Tuesday, with the force urging motorists to slow down and drive to the conditions.

Flights to Glasgow and Edinburgh from Stornoway Airport were delayed and three schools were shut in the Highlands due to the weather.

Aberdeenshire was one of the coldest spots on Tuesday, where the temperature plunged to minus 5C.
