Meet the lonely greyhound nobody wants who has now spent three years at a Plymouth rescue centre. Since he arrived at Woodside Animal Welfare Trust more than 1,000 days ago, Bobby has seen hundreds of other dogs come and go after finding their forever homes.

Staff believe "sweet, affectionate" Bobby is being overlooked because of the colour of his fur and perceptions of his breed - but they are refusing to give up hope for him.

Bobby, who is now six, retired from the racing track just two days before arriving at Woodside, so has never known the comforts of a home. However he loves a sofa and has a favourite armchair at the sanctuary at Elfordleigh on the edge of Plympton.

Sanctuary manager Lisa Darcy said: “Bobby has never had a home so doesn’t realise what he’s missing out on, but we do. We just can’t put our finger on why he’s not found his forever home.

"He’s friendly, gentle and loves walks but he’s also happy spending most of the time on the sofa with his legs in the air! He’s happy around other dogs and is sociable so would make a great companion to visit places with.

“When Bobby loves you, he really loves you and when he sees you, he gets so excited and bounces - you can see the joy in him.”

She added: “Greyhounds are hard to rehome because they are often misunderstood. Throw in the fact that Bobby is black, which in the animal world is often the most unpicked colour, and the paw Bobby’s been dealt has meant finding him a home has not been easy.

“Because of their size people think greyhounds need a lot of exercise, but they don’t. Most greyhounds are easy-going dogs who make great companions.”

Bobby loves seeing his carers and dog walkers and will literally jump for joy. This meant that he recently hurt his back but he's recovering well.

Lisa added: “Bobby is a lovely dog. He can be overprotective of toys and not want to share them, but he has had training which we can teach his new owners so that this can be easily managed in the home.

“Because of this we think it’s best that Bobby is the only dog in his new home and that any children are aged 16-plus. He would probably be best suited to someone who is not a first-time dog owner, someone who is experienced with dogs and can read the signs for how Bobby is feeling.”

Bobby will need to be rehomed within a 20-mile radius of the sanctuary so that the charity can continue to support his health needs.
