Long Covid warning signs and North Staffordshire NHS centres that can help you
It is estimated that around two million people across the UK are still battling with Covid. And with new variants emerging, many more diagnoses are expected.
However, with pandemic protocols now a thing of the past, some are unsure where to turn. Long Covid, or post-Covid syndrome, can affect individuals of any age, with persistent symptoms lasting over 12 weeks.
According to the NHS, these symptoms include extreme fatigue, breathlessness, muscle aches, joint pain, and difficulty concentrating. Patients may also experience prolonged side effects following a standard Covid infection, which could subside and does not necessarily indicate they have Long Covid.

These include loss of smell, chest pain or tightness, sleep difficulties, pins and needles, tinnitus, rashes, coughs, headaches, sore throats, diarrhoea, stomach aches, and loss of appetite. In the wake of the pandemic, the NHS set up specific long Covid services across England and developed a wealth of resources and information for patients to manage their condition if possible.
As of April 2024, more than 100 NHS trusts, hospitals, and medical centres provide these services for adults. Thirteen of these post-Covid syndrome hubs also provide specialist paediatric care for children and young people with Long Covid.
The Express reports how the hubs offer a range of services including physical, cognitive and psychological assessments, diagnostic tests, and management or referrals to Covid rehabilitation, treatment and a range of other support. According to the NHS website the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is among the organisations 'providing post COVID services for adults'.
The Trust is responsible for Bradwell, Cheadle, Haywood and Leek Moorlands Hospital. In addition it also runs St George's Hospital in Stafford - where the Trust's HQ is based.
Anyone who believes they may have Long Covid, or have had Covid symptoms for four weeks or more, are advised to contact their GP who can help them determine the most appropriate next steps according to their personal circumstances.
This could include a referral to the Long Covid service hubs, particularly if the symptoms are having an impact on your life. If your day-to-day is being devastated by your condition, the Long Covid SOS portal signposts patients to a variety of assistance, guidance, information and next steps for patients who may be in crisis situations due to their illness.
