Local residents say they are shocked at reports of a “serious sexual assault” on the quiet and usually safe Long Eaton road. The usually passive suburb of Long Eaton was disturbed last night at around 8pm after a serious police presence was reported at the One Stop convenience store on the corner of College Street and Dockholm Road.

The residents were shocked to find that the incident was not related to a robbery which has been reported previously in the area, as Derbyshire police released information on Thursday(September 12) morning that there had been a “serious sexual assault” in the area of the corner shop.

Derbyshire police have also released a statement stating they have arrested a man in his 50s in connection with the incident, however no further information has been released.

Local residents in the area were shocked to find out that this had occurred on their quiet street. Mo Nicholson, 52, of College Street said: “It’s made me feel shaky, goosebumpy and shivery and not safe. I’ve lived here thirty years and it's the first time I’ve known anything like this to happen.

"I saw about two or three police cars when I was walking my dogs but there had been robberies here before so I assumed it had been one.”

The One Stop where the assault allegedly occurred has remained shut since last night, with a police cordon remaining at the scene until this morning, however when Derbyshire Live reporter Louis Corbett attended the scene there had just been one patrol car monitoring the site.

This news of an assault was distressing for local residents, with resident Dan Stone stating: “It’s just sad and horrible. We didn’t see anyone hurt so we assumed it was a robbery, oh gosh it's disgusting.”

The area of Long Eaton North as reported by Derbyshire police statistics has a relatively low crime rate of 79 crimes as of July 2024. as compared to the Nottingham area Stapleford which has a reported 206 per month from July 2024. Therefore locals the area were subsequently surprised at hearing the reports of this nature on their doorstep.

One local resident of College Street Destiny Yasara,33, said: “People used to say to me that Long Eaton wasn’t safe but I think it's really safe. This kind of thing is really scary to me, this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this in the area.”

Derbyshire police are yet to release more information of the events leading up to the incident, and what occurred, if you have any information regarding the incident then please contact Derbyshire police.
