CrossFit is one of the biggest fitness trends of recent years.

This unique style of athletic training promotes the idea of whole-body functional fitness. Developed by a Californian former gymnast and celebrity fitness trainer Greg Glassman with Lauren Jenai in 2000, CrossFit covers cardiovascular and respiratory endurance; flexibility; power; strength; stamina; speed; balance; agility; coordination; and accuracy.

While the regime has grown exponentially and the annual CrossFit Games showpiece attract thousands of live fans, with millions watching online, at its core it remains a brilliant way to improve your overall fitness – whatever your age or ability.

And that is the message at the heart of the newly opened Training Design Gym, in Chelmsford. Owner Rich Marchant, 41, is hugely passionate about the difference CrossFit can make to anyone. For the former motorbike racer, turned personal trainer, turned CrossFit advocate, the Training Design Gym is the culmination of more than a decade of planning and hoping.

It took more than a year to secure the Montrose Road location and he and manager Katie Conetta had to contend with all the hold-ups that Covid pandemic brought with it.

“The Training Design is more than just a gym, it’s a place to make new friends and be part of a community,” said Rich.

One member is a 67-year-old grandad, who before signing up to the Training Design could barely bend down to play with his grandkids. Now he’s more active and in-shape than he has been for decades.

And that’s the message the Training Design team are keen to get across.

“Often when people first see a CrossFit gym they can feel a bit intimidated,” said Katie. “But here its actually a really friendly and supportive environment.”

With a three-tier membership available, a mezzanine lounge and top-notch changing rooms, the gym is more than just a workout space – it’s a burgeoning community, says Rich.

“We provide an affordable, high quality and friendly environment for our members to train in, offering help, direction and motivation, from highly experienced and trained coaches.

“Our group classes are fully coached, to help each and every person along the way so you can really get the most out of every session.

“The classes are designed and programmed by coaches with vast experience, to help you constantly progress and see results. We take the guesswork out of training, and provide a structured program which is constantly varied.”

Still unsure if CrossFit is for you? The Training Design offers a free introduction to the gym, where one of the experienced coaches will show you around, talk about your goals and get you started on a seven-day free trial.
