Belgian cyclist Gerben Thijssen is in intensive care after suffering a nasty crash at the Ghent Six Day event on Tuesday, though his team insist there is early optimism regarding his recovery.

Lotto–Soudal rider Thijssen, who was attended to on track before being transported to hospital, suffered three small brain haemorrhages and fractured three ribs and a collarbone in the incident on opening night.

The crash occurred when the Belgian, 21, made contact with Danish rider Oliver Wulff Frederiksen on the last lap of the supersprint.

"Gerben remained conscious at all times," said team spokesperson Philippe Maertens.

"Later on Wednesday he will undergo a few more examinations. He is expected to remain in intensive care between one and three days. Fortunately his condition is stable."

The team later added: "Fortunately there is some slight optimism. Less than 18h after his terrible crash, Gerben was able to have a small conversation with his family. Keep fighting, Gerben."

The rest of Tuesday's schedule was cancelled following the crash at the request of other riders.
