Loud blasts could be heard across Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, on January 5, as protesters entered the city mayor’s office and a fire broke out there.
This footage by a resident of Almaty shows smoke rising as loud bangs are heard. RFE reported the use by police of “tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets”. There were unconfirmed reports of gunfire.
