Louis Tomlinson is speaking in depth about the tragic death of his mother for the very first time.

The former One Direction star lost his mum Johannah Deakin to leukaemia in December, days before he was to launch his inspiring debut solo single 'Just Hold On'.

While he's thanked supportive fans on social media, he broke his silence about the loss of Johannah during an interview with SiriusXM Radio on Wednesday (January 18).

"It's not something that I feel 100% comfortable talking too much about but just quickly, when I first found out the news I kind of did want to throw the towel in," he admitted.

"But it was my mum who said to me that I've just got to keep going, telling me very sternly that she wanted me to [keep going]."

Only days after Johannah's death, Louis turned up on The X Factor finale for an emotional first performance of 'Just Hold On' that left fans in tears.

Louis's former One Direction bandmates rallied behind him backstage at The X Factor that night, while his long-time mentor Simon Cowell called the singer "brave" during the show itself.

"It was tough, but I felt like it was nice for me to almost have a little send off for her," he said of that X Factor appearance.

Last month, Johannah's husband shared a beautiful and poignant final message she'd written to thank the millions of fans worldwide who'd changed her son's life.
