A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering 16-year-old Louise Smith whose body was found in woodland after she disappeared in Havant, Hampshire, on VE Day.

Hampshire Police said officers investigating the death rearrested a man and woman from Havant on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and the 29-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They remain in custody, police said. Both were previously arrested on suspicion of kidnap on May 14 and had been released on bail.

The teenager, who had been missing since VE Day, was found in woodland on Thursday evening, police said.

In an update on Saturday, police said formal identification procedures had been completed with Louise’s family being informed and supported by specialist officers.

On Sunday, Hampshire Police launched a murder investigation in connection with Louise's death.

Detective Chief Superintendent Scott Mackechnie said: “This is a tragedy, and our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Louise at this incredibly difficult time.

“This is now a murder investigation and our focus is to identify who is responsible. To do this it is crucial that we capture as much information as possible regarding the moments leading up to her death.

“We know that news of her murder will leave the community shocked and upset, but we are turning to you for your help, because information you have could be key in this investigation."
