Love Island trolls have been condemned by the show for their "wholly unacceptable" messages aimed at contestants.

During yesterday's (June 30) instalment, the viewership was left divided following the elimination of Shannon Singh, with some social media users taking matters too far and trolling the contestants.

In response to this backlash, a statement was uploaded to Twitter today (July 1) highlighting the inappropriate nature of it and urging fans to be kinder to each other, the Islanders and their families.

"We want Love Island to be a positive experience for all of our cast and their friends and family members. Last night's episode created strong reactions but some viewers' posts were wholly unacceptable," the official Love Island post read.

"We take these matters extremely seriously and will support cast members and their families in reporting such posts. We would once again urge all of our viewers to think before posting, and remember that our Islanders are people with feelings."

Shannon herself spoke about her exit, admitting she thought it was "fair".

"I am a bit gutted. Do you know what, out of all the girls, I think it is fair it's me because I didn't have any emotional attachments to the guys, but all the girls had tiny little things [going on]."

Love Island will continue on ITV2, and is available via catch up on ITV Hub.
