'Loving Father' Among 2 Delta Workers Killed and 1 Injured After Maintenance Incident at Atlanta Airport
A tire reportedly "exploded" and sent metal flying
Two Delta workers were killed and another was injured in an incident at a maintenance facility at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport early on Tuesday, Aug. 27, PEOPLE confirms.
The airline said in a statement that it occurred at a wheel and brake shop at their Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility and killed two team members. Another person was hurt.
Delta officials described it as an "accident," with John Laughter, executive vice president and chief of operations and president of TechOps, saying in a statement that the third victim was left "seriously injured."
Laughter said the airline was making counseling available to employees.
The facility is part of Delta TechOps, which performs maintenance and work for more than 150 aviation and airline customers across the globe, the Associated Press reported.
The two deceased workers were identified by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, citing the medical examiner, as Luis Aldarondo, 37, and 58-year-old Mirko Marweg.
Marweg's wife told the paper that he was a "loving father and a loving husband, loving brother.”
A tire had "exploded" during maintenance and sent metal flying, local TV station WSB reported, while the AJC reported that the incident "involved components of an aircraft wheel that was in the shop and not attached to a plane."
"We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time," Delta said in its statement.

The airport told PEOPLE that the incident did not impact their operations, while a statement released a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) offered their "condolences."

The Federal Aviation Administration told PEOPLE that they were aware of the incident and were in communication with Delta.
