Low Scores in Dubai: A Fan's Take

The European Tour had another exciting opening day at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Seasoned veterans and new faces both showed promise during the first round. The course has yielded very low scores and the putting surfaces allowed for miraculous shots from far distances. Here is a recap of the first day.

The current leader is 27 year old Rafael Cabrera-Bello from Spain. The young golfer has won once previously on the European Tour in Austria. His impressive -9 round amazed fans. On the back nine, the golfer made 7 birdies with only two pars on holes twelve and fifteen. If he keeps up this performance, Rafael will ease his way into victory and claim his second championship on the European Tour.

Thomas Bjørn of Denmark also had an impressive performance. This veteran of the sport already has 19 victories to his name. Thomas shot an opening round score of 66, with only two bogeys on the day. With so much experience and time under his belt, Bjørn is my pick to go on and win the tournament. I expect great things from this Danish professional.

John Daly also played in Dubai. While his opening round was not as impressive as his first day in Abu Dhabi where he shot -5, Daly still managed to be competitive. He is currently tied in 54th place at -1. I most enjoy seeing the polarizing character play golf. He shows glimpses of his former greatness and it is nice from a spectators perspective to see a man with much talent bounce back and perform so well.

Other notable players included Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Robert Rock who beat Tiger Woods in Abu Dhabi. Both Rory and Martin are currently tied for fourth at -6. McIlroy made an impressive six birdies on the back nine. Kaymer capped his day off with an eagle at hole eighteen. Rock will have to have a very solid round of golf on Friday if he is to remain in the tournament. He is currently at +1.

The finish in Dubai is bound to be exciting. I am looking forward to seeing how this tournament unfolds and who will come out victorious.

I am an avid golf fan. I enjoy playing recreational on local courses and watching the PGA Tour. I also like keeping up to date with all the new faces to the game.
