Lowry masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’ to go on display in Bury in 'must for all footy fans'
LS Lowry’s masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’ is going on display at Bury Art Museum as part of a celebratory exhibition around football and its fan culture.
From October 4 to March 1, 2025 the museum is hosting an exhibition celebrating the national game which will feature images of fans from a host of Greater Manchester and other north west teams. The 1953 painting shows fans arriving for a Bolton Wanderers game at their former home, Burnden Park. Also on display will be iconic photographs of football fans of various teams from the North West, such as Bury FC, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Oldham and Bolton.

Bury Art Museum has collaborated with the British Culture Archive, photographers Debs Parr, Richard Davis, Zoe Hitchen and Phil Hill to bring an exciting perspective on what it means to be a football fan. Also on display with be artefacts loaned by Bury Football Club fans.

‘Going to the Match’ was purchased for a record £7.8 million by The Lowry in Salford in 2022. The world-renowned artwork, has been on public display since the gallery opened in 2000, but was previously not owned by the venue.
The Lowry ensured the iconic work was kept in the region when its previous owners, the Professional Footballers’ Association put it up for sale. The Lowry working with venues across the region to ensure that the picture can be enjoyed by audiences across the region, thanks to a £95,000 grant from Arts Council England through its national lottery project grants programme and additional support from The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.
