A brokenhearted dog was found lying loyally by his friend’s body after she was hit by a car and died.

The dog, as yet unnamed, was found by animal control when a resident reported that a dog had been hit by a car on Dan Avenue in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

When they arrived, they found a black lab who had been hit and died at the scene, and a grizzled Shepherd-Collie mix who hadn’t left her side for around five hours.

Officer Mike Owens told KRTK, “We’ve seen them where they will run together and stuff like that but not where one of them had already gone and the other one would be lying beside it.

“Me and another officer had to pick him up and put him in the back of our truck.

“Then we had to pick [the dead dog] up and put her in the back of the truck and it seemed to calm him down a little bit when we picked her up but he was still wanting to try and get over to the next kennel.”

The dog is not eating much but is otherwise in fairly good condition – because of this, it’s thought that he has a family somewhere.

Jonesboro Animal Control are now trying to find someone to care for him.

“If you know him please call us or his owners and let them know that he’s at Animal Control,” they posted on Facebook.

“He’s a male shepherd collie mix we think and is very old. So please help us help him get home.

“As of Monday the 9th, still no owner. He is doing ok, not much on eating at the moment but just a little at a time. We will be looking to adopt him on Friday the 13th.”
