Lucifer is back and more delightfully evil than ever in its third season trailer. And even more exciting Smallville's Tom Welling is returning to DC Universe.

Last we saw Mr Mephistopheles he was stranded in the middle of the desert having miraculously had his angelic wings restored. Maybe it was a cosmic gift for sending his sadistic mum off to a pocket universe? (Probably not.)

Giving him trouble this season will be Tom Welling in his first recurring TV role since Smallville. The actor has been cast as a police lieutenant Marcus Pierce, who rubs Lucifer up the wrong way as a rival for Decker's (Lauren German) affection.

The DC Entertainment series actually picks up with a four-part mini-series originally intended to be released as part of Lucifer's second season.

Executive producer Joe Henderson revealed last spring that he ultimately felt that the mini-series felt more connected to the arc of the third season, rather than its initial run.

"We designed this season to be an 18-episode arc because we originally were going to be 18 episodes," Henderson said.

"But then we got four more, so we decided to create four episodes that let us play around a bit. Dig deeper into the character stories, play with format a bit, etc.

"We didn't know whether they'd air this season or next until now. Now we do. So bad news is you need to wait for them. And I know that sucks."

The mini-series kicks off with Lucifer (Tom Ellis) heading south to San Diego "to heat things up", according to an official synopsis. We imagine the temperature will indeed be rising substantially in the seaside town...

Lucifer returns in the US on Monday, October 2, at 8/7c on Fox, and will eventually air on Amazon Prime in the UK.
