Barcelona have been linked with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz. However, a move wouldn’t be as easy as it is being touted.

Barcelona are set for major upheaval this summer as Hansi Flick takes over the reins from Xavi. Blaugrana finished 10 points behind their arch-rivals Real Madrid, conceding the La Liga title in the process.

Barca’s feeble attack has been one of the main reasons for their shortcomings. On the flanks, they have heavily relied on Lamine Yamal to conjure up moments of magic and inspire the team. But you cannot bank your hopes on a 16-year-old kid to shoulder leadership responsibilities and be the messiah for next season.

Raphinha - a one-time Liverpool transfer target - has grown into a consistent goal and assist supplier, with 10 goals and 13 assists in 37 games, and Ferran Torres remains a loyal workhorse, but Barcelona’s struggles have lied in the lack of depth on the flanks and absence of a player who can deliver in those nervy and crucial moments.

According to Spanish Newspaper AS, the club's sporting director Deco is attentive to that and has made Colombia international Diaz his prime target.

Barcelona certainly want to sign a winger this summer. Xavi’s preference was Athletic Club’s Nico Williams but with the legendary midfielder's departure confirmed, the focus is now shifting to Diaz.

Deco believes Barcelona lack the physical prowess in attack and an X-factor - and the Liverpool star would tick those boxes. The Brazilian executive is said to have been in touch with Diaz’s representatives.

The player's father asserted in the past that his son is a Barcelona fan, saying: "It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona fan and it would be his dream to go there." So a move to Catalonia could certainly be on the bucket list for the 27-year-old, who signed for the Reds in 2022 for an initial sum of £37.5m and has netted 24 goals and provided 13 assists in 98 appearances.

But even if Diaz was to push to leave Liverpool for Barcelona, there is one stumbling block - money. Barca's reckless overspending has landed them in a perilous financial situation. The Spanish outfit will need to sell and generate cash to sign new players to comply with La Liga’s financial policies.

The futures of attackers Raphinha and Ansu Fati are up in the air with the former said to be generating interest from the Premier League and Saudi Arabia.

Diaz is valued at £64m and it is unlikely that Barcelona will be able to afford him unless they make major sales. So while he would be the perfect candidate to provide pace, experience and leadership on the flanks, for now, the move looks a non-starter.
