In the words of wise old Cogsworth the Clock in Beauty and the Beast: "If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it!"

And Luke Evans - who takes on the brutish "freak of nature" that is Gaston - has revealed that Disney's live-action adaptation shares those very sentiments, staying "very loyal to the original".

"You want the film to do well, especially when it's an adaptation - like Girl on the Train - but I think people are going to love it," the actor told Digital Spy on the set of Noel Clarke's upcoming thriller 10x10.

"We've been very loyal to the original and if it ain't broke don't fix it. I went with the Gaston character and relished every minute of who he is, and what he stands for, and the bad parts of him and all the funny parts of it.

"I think people are going to love it, I really do. I've seen it and it just takes you to that place, that magical Disney place... It's so huge and the film is so beautiful and expansive and it looks fantastic on the big screen - it just looks amazing."

Emma Watson takes on Belle, with Luke applauding the actress for modernising the iconic character, and making her into a "strong, 21st century woman".

"Emma is wonderful at singing," the star continued. "She did incredibly well, and she put a lot of work into it too. It was so nice to see her finally sing the songs, and I think she really enjoyed it.

"I'm very proud of her achievement in the film - not just her singing ability but how she's portrayed Belle and how she's brought it to a 21st century, strong woman. She saves the man in the film, really. She's 100% made it feminist and empowering - when you watch it, you'll understand."

Dan Stevens stars as the Beast, Ewan McGregor takes on Lumiere, Emma Thompson plays the lovable Mrs Potts, and Sir Ian McKellen is the comical Cogsworth.

Beauty and the Beast is released in the UK on March 17.
