Luke Shaw has committed his long-term future to Manchester United by signing a new five-year contract at Old Trafford.

Shaw has signed a deal believed to be worth around £150,000-a-week , and only put pen to paper after being convinced that he will be United's first-choice left-back.

The deal marks an impressive turnaround in Shaw's fortunes at United, with the England international's future at the club in doubt even as recently as this summer.

Shaw's impressive form for Southampton during the 2013-14 season earned him a slot in the PFA Team of the Year and a World Cup debut for England.

With Chelsea interested in Shaw, United moved quickly that summer to sign the 18-year-old in a deal worth up to £30million - a then-world record transfer fee for a teenager.

Shaw's first season at Old Trafford was hampered by at least nine separate injuries and criticism from Louis van Gaal over his weight, but he hit the ground running in the 2015-16 campaign.

He started each of United's first five Premier League games, and his form and fitness earned rave reviews from Red Devils fans as he looked to make the left-back slot his own - that is, until a horrific night in Eindhoven.

Huge setback

The defender suffered a terrible injury in United's first Champions League game of the season away at PSV Eindhoven - a double leg fracture after a 50/50 challenge with Hector Moreno.

The fact that the injury occurred in PSV's penalty area following a marauding run came as a cruel irony given much of the early-season praise for Shaw was down to him offering United an attacking threat from the left flank.

Shaw revealed in the summer of 2018 that he was close to losing his leg after blood clots formed following the injury, and credited doctors with saving the limb by deciding not to immediately fly him back from the Netherlands to Manchester.

Not-so-special relationship

Shaw returned at the start of the 2016-17 season - the same time Mourinho took charge at United. The defender has had a fraught relationship with the coach, with Mourinho's bug-bears including Shaw's performances, pain threshold, injury layoffs, commitment, training intensity, attitude and focus to name but a few.

In one remarkable post-match interview, Mourinho suggested Shaw's good performance against Everton was only because "I making every decision for him... it was his body with my brain" - not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Future looks bright

The defender has often been criticised for perceived weight issues, with a 2018 holiday picture from Ibiza particularly unflattering for Shaw at a time when his future looked to be in the balance.

But the defender spent the summer training hard to start the new season in top shape, and won the club's Player of the Month awards for both August and September to kickstart his Old Trafford career and earn a bumper new contract.
