Hard Sun may look like a police drama from the offset – albeit one which happens to deal with the end of the world – but the show's creator Neil Cross says the finale will change everything.

Luther creator Cross is bringing us a new BBC One six-part drama which follows two conflicting detectives, played by Jim Sturgess and Agyness Deyn, as they're pursued by ruthless secret agents after discovering that the end of the world is nigh.

"Like Luther it kind of starts in some way resembling a cop show, as there's crime each week and they investigate it, and there's a police station... but by the time we get to episode six, it's something completely different," Cross told Digital Spy.

On the strong dynamic between the lead characters DI Hicks (Sturgess) and DI Renko (Deyn), Cross continued: "Renko stands antithetically to Hicks – we could have the show even without the end of the world.

"I wanted to have these two characters that stand antithetically to each other - that it never becomes a buddy movie, and they don't feel in love or become best friends.

"They dislike one another not without profoundly good reason and they are forced through circumstance to become at least temporarily allies."

Deyn's Renko is damaged yet capable, and immune to corruption, while Sturgess's Hicks is a vulnerable yet crooked anti-hero.

"The whole show is a constant dance between who can trust who, who is betraying who," he added.

The series ends on a cliffhanger – and Cross revealed he already has an idea for a potential follow-up run.

"If people like it, and enough people like it, hopefully there's more... I have a five-year plan," he concluded.

Hard Sun begins on BBC One on Saturday at 9pm.
