'Luther' fans complain that the latest series is 'too gruesome'

Even ardent fans of Luther reckon that the latest series of the detective show has possibly tipped over the edge.

In pursuit of a clown mask-wearing killer on the streets of London, Idris Elba’s grizzled copper appears to be stacking up the corpses.

Over the space of just three episodes, aired in quick succession by the BBC since New Year’s Day, there have been 16 stabbings and 11 dead bodies.

There have also been scenes of surgery and in one instance, eyeballs being cut out.

And it’s left some viewers pretty grossed out.

Last night’s episode also had fans of the show in bits, as it killed off one of the show’s most beloved characters.

Michael Smiley’s DS Benny ‘Deadhead’ Silver was shot dead, to the dismay of viewers.

Some are holding out hope that maybe he’s going to be alright… maybe that was someone else’s blood… but it doesn’t look good.

Luther returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
