Idris Elba has provided a major update on the Luther movie, confirming it will begin filming this year.
During an appearance (via Zoom) on The All-New Capital Weekender, the actor revealed that he'll soon start shooting the feature-length spin-off of the the hit BBC detective series.
Speaking to host MistaJam, Elba was asked what he'll be up to in 2021, to which he replied: "Apart from making more music, people that love my film and stuff, listen, I'm going to be making Luther: The Movie.
"I'm super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that. It's been a long time coming for a movie, so I'm excited about that."
Fans have been hoping for a film version of the crime drama since the show aired its fifth and final series in 2019. A year later, after accepting the Special Award at the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards 2020, Elba confirmed it was happening.
"I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film," he told Digital Spy and other press at the time. "That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen. It is happening!"
He added: "With a film, the sky is the limit. Obviously, you can be a little bit more bold in the storylines, maybe international, a little bit sort of up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."
