Sound and light show Luxmuralis is all set for its return to Durham Cathedral where it will be bringing a blaze of colour to dark autumn nights.

The immersive experience, which transforms the interior of the city landmark with light projections, moving images and surround sound, this time will have an intergalactic theme. This year marks the third visit to the cathedral for Luxmuralis - whose previous events have been a sell-out - and new after-dark show Space will make its debut there on October 9 and run until October 13.

Visitors can book an evening time-slot to follow a route around the building which will take in scenes of swirling galaxies and original footage of a rocket launch. It promises another treat from Peter Walker, director of artistic collaboration Luxmuralis whose works have been touring cathedrals in England for years.

Peter was also the artist behind the recent Peace Doves installation in the cathedral, while composer David Harper also worked on both projects. Andrew Usher, Durham Cathedral's chief officer in visitor experience and enterprise, said: "We're really looking forward to welcoming the artists behind Luxmuralis back to Durham Cathedral once again.

"Following the success of previous years, we released the tickets earlier this year so people could plan ahead for their visit in October. As the event is now just a few weeks away, time-slots have already started to sell out so we urge people who still want to get tickets to get them as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

"With a different show, we can't wait to see what Space brings to the cathedral this autumn." The first Luxmuralis light show there was Life which in 2022 transported visitors on a journey through earth, sea and sky as they journeyed around the cathedral interior.

Last year's Science, with projections exploring the elements, DNA and great scientists throughout history, expanded the visitor route into the Cloister and Chapter House. This year's run will again see the cathedral appear normal by day then take on a whole new look at night, with artwork appearing to flow through the building.

Afterwards there will be an opportunity for visitors to reflect upon the experience and light a candle in the Galilee Chapel. The Dean of Durham, The Very Reverend Dr Philip Plyming, said the cathedral is delighted to host the show and added: "Christians believe that the heavens tell the glory of God and there can be no better place than Durham Cathedral to help us wonder at stars and space and reflect on our place within the cosmos."

Entry to Space will require a timed ticket and slots are available between 6.45pm and 9.15pm from October 9-12 of the run then 6.30pm-9pm on October 13. Tickets cost £11; £5 for under-18s and are free for under-threes while the available special offer tickets apply to the first two dates, October 9-10, for the 8.15pm-9.15pm slots at a cost of £7 (£3.25 for children).
