Watch: Teenager jailed for driving into ex-boyfriend
Shocking footage shows the moment a teenager drove into her ex-boyfriend and injured bystanders amid an “uncontrollable rage”.
Lydia Baya is caught on camera mounting the pavement in her mother’s Renault Captur and ploughing into her former partner and a 16-year-old girl he was with.
The 18-year-old then smashed into a bus stop a few metres down Pershore Road in Birmingham on 14 August, causing injuries to two people there.
Baya, who was jailed over what police called a “deliberate act of reckless driving”, then left the car and walked off.
The footage was captured by a bus’s camera, and its passengers disembarked to join other people in helping the injured, who were treated in hospital.
The ex-boyfriend and girl were left with cuts and bruises, as was a 45-year-old woman, with all three having since recovered.
A 58-year-old woman suffered a shattered pelvis and West Midlands Police said she has been left in fear of leaving her home.
Baya, from Dudley, was arrested nearby and later pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and one of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Wolverhampton Crown Court in November.
She was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and will be banned from driving for 12 months upon release.
DC Andy Jones, from the force’s Public Protection Unit, said: “The consequences of Baya’s uncontrollable rage that day was catastrophic.
“It is by pure chance that the victims’ injuries were not more serious or even fatal.”
