A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

Paul McIntyre, 52, is accused of killing 29-year-old Ms McKee, who was shot dead while observing a riot in Londonderry in April last year.

McIntyre, from Derry, is also being charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and professing to be a member of a proscribed organisation.

He appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Supporters of the 52-year-old refused to move from the court entrance, causing a scuffle which involved up to 40 police officers.

Ms Mckee's partner, Sara Canning, was also in court.

Ms McKee had been standing next to a police vehicle when a masked gunman fired towards officers and onlookers.
