Former I'm A Celebrity contestant Frankie Dettori has been taken to hospital following a fall from a horse. The renowned jockey, aged 53, posted on social media yesterday morning to share an image of himself in a hospital bed, revealing that he had dislocated his shoulder.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, he quipped that his shoulder has been "put back together", writing: "I appreciate all the messages. I'm doing OK! I dislocated my right shoulder - my team here in the hospital have put it back together. Thanks for the messages of concern, it means a lot."

Among those sending their best wishes were his former I'm A Celebrity campmates Fred Sirieix and Marvin Humes. Fred Sirieix showed his support with a heart emoji, saying: "All the best Frankie."

According to The Mirror, Marvin Humes, of JLS fame, chimed in too: "Sorry to see Frankie! You'll come back stronger as you always do mate! Big love." Fans also shared their concerns and well-wishes on the post, with one fan commenting: "Get well soon Frankie. Sorry to hear you're hurt."

The news follows reports that jockey Frankie Dettori was ejected from his horse, Pretty Liza, before a race in New York on Thursday. Having moved to the US last year, Dettori was riding at the Aqueduct Racecourse when the incident occurred.

As previously reported, New York Racing Association communications officer Keith McCalmont tweeted: "Pretty Liza unseated [Frankie] at the gate before the start of the @TheNYRA 9th. The horse was scratched and walked off. Dettori walked to the ambulance and will attend [hospital] for further evaluation."

This incident is not Frankie's first perilous encounter with danger - he miraculously survived a deadly plane crash back in 2000 that tragically claimed the life of the pilot, Patrick Mackey. The aircraft ignited shortly after take-off in Sussex and plummeted to the ground.

Frankie was heroically rescued from the wreckage by former jockey Ray Cochrane, who was also aboard during the crash. Dettori came away from the accident with only a broken ankle and a damaged thumb, whereas the emergency services could not save the pilot, Patrick, who died at the site.

In 2020, Frankie marked the 20th anniversary of the crash with a photo of himself lying in bed and covered in injuries. He wrote: "20 years ago tomorrow I survived a plane crash with Ray Cochrane. RIP, my good friend and pilot Patrick Mackey. I’m now on life number 2 and I’m so grateful."

Earlier this year, he also narrowly escaped a serious injury after being thrown from his horse moments after winning a race in LA. After picking up his 28th win in 150 rides he suffered a nasty fall just 50 yards after the finish line. Despite hitting the deck hard, he managed to escape unscathed, but went on to withdraw from further races at the time.

Sadly the horse that had thrown him, Matanas Creek, had been unable to survive the incident had later been put down after sustaining irreperable injuries to his right front fetlock. Speaking at the time, a representative from SF Racing said: "It's a heartbreaking decision to make, but he was euthanised on site. Our hearts go out to the horse and the people who adored and cared for him. Thankfully, Frankie walked away from this tragedy.

Frankie has had a decade-long career as a jockey, having made his debut more than 30 years ago. He announced in 2022 that he would retire the following year but later shared that he had changed his mind, saying: "At the moment, because I'm still winning and the adrenaline is still there, the public still follow me - I'm sorry everyone, I made a mistake, I shouldn't have said I was going to retire."

Over the course of his career, he's made various TV appearances including having been a team captain on A Question of Sport. He's also competed on reality TV shows like Celebrity Big Brother, having been a housemate in 2013.

He notably was a campmate on I'm A Celebrity last year. Frankie entered the jungle as a late arrival alongside professional boxer Tony Bellew. The jockey went on to become the first contestant voted out of camp in the series, which ended up being won by Sam Thompson, with Tony as runner-up.
