M&S is FINALLY going to deliver food to our doors

From Digital Spy

Fans of the Marks & Spencer food hall – Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillars, mostly – will soon be able to have all those fine ready meals and sweet treats delivered straight to their front door. And there isn't too long to wait.

The posh-food retailer is planning to trial an online food delivery service this autumn, The Guardian reports. Although a limited selection of food and drink is already available on M&S's website, this will be the first time a full range has been made available online.

So, why now? It's said the company hadn't felt the need to provide the service in the past because its customers only buy a few items of a time (the aforementioned Percy and Colin, probs), typically on the go.

But the brand has decided to join its supermarket rivals in taking on the fastest-growing section of the UK's £180 billion grocery market. Time to start saving, as we all know M&S is for treat days and post-pay-day splurges only.

"We continue to review food online carefully," said Steve Rowe, chief executive of M&S. "It has not cost us anything over the last five years by not being online with food. Our customers haven't moved yet, but they will and we need to ensure that we are ready with the right response.

"There are unanswered questions over what this means for M&S and we have a team looking at this now with a view to undertaking a soft trial in the autumn."

It's also believed that the decision to expand its online offering is down to Rowe's aim to turn around the company's declining profits.

In November last year, it was announced that M&S plans to shut 'dozens' of shops, particularly those in quieter high streets, while also converting many stores into food-only outlets.
