M&S 'do not eat' warning for popular food item that 'may contain metal'

Marks and Spencer has issued an urgent recall of its popular food item that may contain small pieces of metal.

The retailers' Smooth Butternut Squash Soup has been removed from sale and the Food Standards Agency (FSA has released a warning asking anyone with the soup in their fridge not to consume it.

Instead, affected items can be returned to any M&S store for a full refund, and additional information is available through M&S customer services at 03330148555. Only packs with the use by date of October 6, 2024, are involved in this recall while notices in all stores are alerting customers to the situation.

The notices state: "Customer safety is of paramount importance to Marks and Spencer, and we take all issued regarding the production of our foods extremely seriously. Marks and Spencer is recalling its Smooth Butternut Squash Soup for the potential presence of small traces of metal in a small number of packs."

The retailer apologises for the inconvenience and reminds customers: "Please do not consume this product. Any customers in possession of this product can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given."

In a separate recall, the FSA has issued alerts for dozens of products across various brands and retailers due to a risk of peanut allergy. The agency is urgently collaborating with Local Authorities and businesses to identify potentially affected items.

It has advised individuals with a peanut allergy to avoid foods containing or possibly containing mustard, mustard powder, or mustard flour as part of this recall. On Tuesday (October 1), an additional 52 products were added to the recall list, including mayonnaise, seasonings, and sauces - the full list can be found here.
