As its vaccination drive reaches a third of adults and COVID-19 infections ease, Europe is starting to reopen cities and beaches, raising hopes that this summer's holiday season can be saved before it is too late. With 200 million vaccine doses delivered, the European Union is on track to achieve its goal of inoculating 70% of its adult population by summer, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted on Sunday. And, in Germany, a first weekend of summer sun lifted spirits after Health Minister Jens Spahn declared the third wave of the pandemic finally broken.

AstraZeneca Plc has delivered 50 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to European Union countries, according to EU's latest supply data, a milestone it was originally due to hit in January. AstraZeneca had shipped nearly 50 million doses as of May 7, an EU official told Reuters on Monday, citing the latest EU internal figures on vaccine supplies.

The Conservatives, Greens and Lib-Dems each picked up one seat on the 25-member scrutiny body charged with holding the mayor to account. There were no changes in the 14 constituency seats on the last results in 2016, with Labour retaining nine seats – including marginal areas such as Barnet & Camden and Ealing & Hillingdon – and the Tories five, including increasing their slender majority 10-fold in Havering & Redbridge.
A small whale has been rescued after becoming stranded along the River Thames in south-west London. Hundreds gathered at Richmond Lock and Weir on Sunday evening after the whale, believed to be a Minke whale - between three to four metres long, became stuck. Videos showed it being hosed down by a man, while a vet performed a check-up at the river's edge, before the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) arrived at the scene to cheers at around 9pm. A witness said that "quite the crowd" watched as the attempted rescue took place. Jake Manketo, 20, from Richmond, said: "Everyone here is just hoping they get it out. "We couldn't believe our eyes when we first saw the poor fella, not every day something like this happens in Richmond."
