Police averted a possible Islamist attack on a synagogue in western Germany and arrested four people including a 16-year-old Syrian youth in connection with the threat, the regional interior minister said on Thursday. Authorities had received a "a very serious and concrete tip" that an attack on the synagogue in the town of Hagen could take place during the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur, the minister, Herbert Reul, said. Officers tightened security around the building on Wednesday evening and searched it for bombs but found nothing dangerous, Reul, interior minister for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, told a news conference.

Climate Change Conference plans to visit South Africa ahead of the November talks, officials said, to discuss helping it end an over-reliance on coal that makes it one of the world's leading carbon emitters. South African Environment Ministry spokesperson Albi Modise said discussions involving British envoy John Murton would focus on cooperation in the transition from coal to renewables ahead of the COP26 in Glasgow. A COP26 spokesman confirmed that senior UK government COP26 representatives and international partners would travel to South Africa in coming weeks.

Marks and Spencer is to close 11 stores in France blaming "lengthy and complex export processes" affecting fresh and chilled products following Brexit. LONDON (Reuters) -British retailer Marks & Spencer said it would close all 11 French franchise food stores it runs with its partner SFH because trade rules in place since Britain left the European Union had hammered product availability. M&S said on Thursday that its remaining nine French franchise stores, run with Lagardere Travel Retail, will continue to trade and the pair were working on a sustainable future business model. Chairman Archie Norman has complained for months that M&S was struggling to get goods into Ireland and France since Britain left the EU single market at the beginning of the year, due to the huge amount of extra paperwork.
