M1 diversion route as southbound closed between J26 for Nottingham and J28 for Mansfield

Motorists faced delays due to the 12-hour closure of the M1 southbound in Nottinghamshire today (Saturday, September 21). A fatal crash involving a lorry and a car closed the southbound side between J28 (South Normanton/ Mansfield ) and J26 (Nottingham).

A police investigation is underway after a 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug-driving. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Nottinghamshire Police officers were at the scene and East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics also attended, assisted by National Highways traffic officers. The road was from around 4.20am until around 4.30pm, according to traffic information service Inrix.

Highways East Midlands confirmed the road closure just after 5am this morning. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, a spokesperson said: "The M1 in Nottinghamshire is closed southbound following a serious collision between J27 Nottingham/LangleyMill and J26 Nottingham."

The closure was later extended to junction 28, according to Highways and traffic information service Inrix. All delays had eased by around 5pm.
