A serious crash left the M40 closed northbound for hours. The carriageway, between Junction 11 at Banbury and Junction 12 at Gaydon in Warwickshire, remained closed for the majority of the night after a collision at around 7.45pm yesterday, Saturday, September 28.

Two lanes were also shut southbound. National Highways described the crash as 'serious' and a number of vehicles were reported to have been involved.

The central reservation was damaged, with motorists advised to avoid the area and follow diversions 'where possible'. West Midlands National Highways said all lanes reopened early this morning and there were now no delays.

One driver wrote on Facebook: "Really big and serious crash on the M40 near Gaydon. There are two police helicopters circling the area.

"It's really bad. Loads of emergency services and the traffic is at a very long standstill. Thinking of those involved. By 11pm all cars turned off the engines and sat in the darkness while the emergency workers did their job."
