M6 through Cheshire shut and five in hospital as 999 crews called to fire

Five people were taken to hospital after a fire shut the M6. Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway to reports of a blazing involving a car and caravan.

And during the height of the incident, between junctions 18 and 19, the motorway had to be closed. The alarm was raised just after 9.05pm last night (September 20).

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service sent engines from Lymm, Winsford and Northwich to the scene. A spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a car and caravan on fire on the M6 northbound.

"On arrival they found that both were well alight. Breathing apparatus and hose reel jets were used by firefighters the extinguish the fire.

"Five casualties were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital as a precaution. The road was closed while the incident was dealt with."
