Police issued a stern warning to M60 motorists on Sunday night as some were spotted REVERSING back along the motorway.

On Sunday evening, police said they had reports of drivers trying to avoid queues by reversing down the motorway. They said they caught motorists doing it at junction 16 of the M60 at Clifton Interchange, where the M60 and M61 meets.

On Sunday night, North West Motorway Police posted: "We are now getting reports of vehicles reversing back along hard should of the M60 so they can then travel contra on the on slip at j16 M60 clockwise - cameras are now monitoring the scene - please do not do this again someone will get hurt."

Fellow drivers slammed them in response to the post, with one saying: "Where do these morons come from for Christ's sake? They should all have their licenses revoked and be banned from ever holding one again!!"

Another added: "Just go to j17 & turn around at the roundabout. It’s literally a mile away if that!"

It came as Greater Manchester's motorways were hit by delays over the weekend amid the major closure of the M62. The motorway was shut from Friday to Sunday for the first phase of a major £22m project, which saw a bridge demolished over the weekend. It meant both westbound and eastbound carriageways were shut, with drivers having to divert their journeys.
