M62 police chase ends in crash with one critical and four women arrested
A driver is in a critical condition after a police chase on the M62 ended with a crash.
Four females - police have not said whether they are women or girls - have been arrested after the car they were in was pursued by police before it crashed on the M62 westbound carriageway. The motorway was shut in both directions until 9pm.
West Yorkshire Police said the Toyota Corolla failed to stop for police on the M62 as it travelled towards the M62 at Birstall. Police pursued the car at speed on to the M62 westbound carriageway, heading towards Manchester.

At around 3pm the Toyota hit a Peugeot 306, just before Junction 24 on the westbound carriageway. Police said the Peugeot driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries and his condition is described as critical but stable.
Four females who were in the Toyota have been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle.
Police said the eastbound carriageway of the M62 has now re-opened, but the westbound carriageway is likely to remain closed until the early hours of Sunday morning.
West Yorkshire Police has notified The Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the chase before the crash.
