M8 junction remains shut off by police as search for 'man with weapon' continues

A junction on the M8 in Lanarkshire remains closed by police, as the force hunts for a "man with a potential weapon".

Officers have sealed off the Junction 6A off-slip at Newhouse following the incident. The A8 was also closed off at Eurocentral and Chapelhall, but has since been reopened as of 4.15pm this afternoon.

The road has been closed since around 9am on Monday (February 3) after police received reports of a man with a potential weapon in the area. Specialist officers are on the scene as police carry out extensive enquiries into the incident.

The exact nature of the incident remains unknown. Glasgow Live has contacted Police Scotland for more information.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area with rush hour approaching and Traffic Scotland has advised drivers to find an alternative route.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said on Monday morning: "Around 8.55am on Monday, 3 February, 2025, we received a report of a man with a possible weapon on the M8 slip road at junction 6 eastbound.

"Police are in attendance and a search of the area is being carried out.

"Specialist officers are also in attendance, as a precaution, and extensive enquiries are ongoing.

"The M8 is closed at junction 6 eastbound for Newhouse and Chapelhall. Motorists are advised to avoid the area while investigations are carried out."
