A machete-wielding yob decided his fearsome blade was no match for a police taser.

Aiden Gaitens dropped the weapon after a chase on the ninth floor of a Motherwell tower block.

The 19-year-old appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted carrying an offensive weapon in Barons Tower on August 11.

Cops were called to a disturbance about 8.30pm. When they reached a stairwell on the ninth floor they saw Gaitens brandishing a large machete.

A short chase followed then Gaitens turned round and brandished the blade at the officers pursuing him.

One cop aimed his taser gun at Gaitens and ordered him to drop the blade which he did.

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment, and he was remanded in custody.

At the time of the incident Gaitens was on early release from a 23-month sentence, having admitted a string of charges.

These included striking a man with a knife - leaving him marked for life - in Tollhouse Gardens, Bellshill.
