Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen attend memorial for murdered police officer

French presidential candidates Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen attended a memorial ceremony for a police officer killed on Paris' iconic Champs-Elysees boulevard in the final days of the presidential campaign.

Karim Cheurfi, a Frenchman born in the Paris suburbs, opened fire with a Kalashnikov assault rifle on the crowded boutique-lined boulevard synonymous with French glamour, striking police officer Xavier Jugele with two bullets to the head and wounding two others before being shot and killed by police.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron came in first in Sunday's vote, with just over 23 percent while far-right leader Marine Le Pen had 21 percent.

The French president will be chosen in a runoff between Le Pen and Macron on May 7.
