Mad Men star Jon Hamm has joined the cast for the Mean Girls musical movie.

The actor, who played Don Draper on the AMC show, will play Coach Carr in the upcoming adaptation of the hit Broadway production (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The musical was based on the iconic 2004 film, which was written by Tina Fey and starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried.

Hamm joins Fey, Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp and Auliʻi Cravalho in the cast for the film, which is being directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. Other cast members include Jaquel Spivey, Bebe Wood, Tim Meadows and Avantika Vandanapu.

Upon the announcement of the film, Fey expressed delight at being able to revisit the material once more: "I'm very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen. It's been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I've spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly."

The story follows new student Cady Heron (Rice) as she starts high school and crosses paths with Karen Smith (Vandanapu), Gretchen Wieners (Wood) and Regina George (Rapp), but with new musical numbers to boot.

It charts the pressures teens face as they find their clique and how everything isn't always so rosy being an 'it' girl, part of the so-called Plastics.

Hamm played Don throughout Mad Men's seven-season run, and previously ruled out the possibility of a potential spin-off or continuation.

"I don't think the desire is there from the executive standpoint. I think we were all pretty happy with how the story ended," he said. "I don't think there's anyone in the cast that wanted to spin it off or revisit it. I don't think [creator] Matthew Weiner wants to either. He's pleased with how he finished up that chapter."

However. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka wouldn't mind reprising her role as Don's daughter Sally for a spin-off so we'll have to wait and hope.

Mean Girls: The Musical currently has no release date, but will stream on Paramount+.
