Former neighbours of the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case have reportedly said he dug a 10ft cellar at a second German allotment.

Maddie McCann went missing from a hotel room in Portugal in 2007 and last month German authorities revealed that they had identified a 43-year-old citizen as a suspect in the case, known as Christian B.

Police investigating the disappearance of the British three-year-old have been searching a garden plot in Seelze on the outskirts of Hannover this week in connection with the 13-year-old case.

Detectives reportedly found a hidden cellar underneath a cabin at the plot, where the prime suspect allegedly live in 2007.

But now the neighbours of a different plot in the town of Braunschweig have claimed that Christian B also used to stay there overnight while he ran a kiosk in Hannover.

This second plot is apparently just 40 miles away from the one which police are currently excavating.

According to MailOnline, owners of the adjoining gardens in Braunschweig said Christian B used to work in a shed there.

The publication reported one neighbour said Christian B dug a "10ft deep and 20ft wide" hole that "took him two months to complete".

Another neighbour is reported to have predicted "police will come soon and start digging up the garden to for traces of Madeleine McCann".

Sabine Sellig, the current plot owner, told local media last month that she had called the police following the original appeal for information about Christian B.

The suspect is currently in prison in Germany. It is believed he lived on the Seelze allotment the same year Madeleine went missing.

Officers put up two tents and continued to dig even further into the ground after they had cut down trees and bushes earlier this week.

A spokeswoman for the Braunschweig prosecutor's office confirmed the investigation on the Seelze site was connected to their inquiry regarding Madeleine.

But prosecutors did not say what exactly the investigators were looking for.

At the garden plot, officers removed parts of the foundation of a former cabin from the ground that once stood there.

According to local newspaper HAZ, they have discovered and searched a cellar underneath the old structure.
